Best Things About Okinawa from Someone Who Lived There

Marli
Okinawa is a beautiful subtropical island. It has everything: culture, music, great food, beaches, wonderful people. This little island is often overlooked by people who aren't native to the region, but that doesn't mean there isn't plenty to see and do. Okinawa, Japan is full of exciting events and places. Here are the top five awesome things about Okinawa, Japan from someone who lived there.

#1: The People!

The absolute best thing about Okinawa, Japan are the native islanders. They're wonderful! They're so kind and friendly and surprisingly interested in any newcomers to the island, including Americans. I was once at a swimming pool in Japan as a child, I walked onto the end of the diving board and did a little cannonball into the water, when I surfaced all of the Japanese people around the pool were clapping for me. It left a lasting impression and I'll always miss the kindness of Okinawan islanders.

#2: Sugarcane and pineapple are the main crop

Because of this, you can make a day of touring a sugarcane or pineapple plantation. It's lovely, because the weather is usually beautiful and you'll get to spend the day amongst the fragrant crop. You can also purchase yummy sweet treats from the gift shop typically associated with the plantation. If you're visiting the island, you should definitely do this. It's a big part of island life.

#3: Whale Watching

You can whale watch off the coast of Okinawa. It's a great experience. You hop on a boat and go out for the day in search of whales. I saw quite a few when I went and it's a nice trip if you can stop yourself from getting sea sick. For lunch you'll dock at an island than get off the boat to eat. Try some piping hot soba and tea. You can rest for a while and chat with your friends before hopping back on the boat for your trip back to Okinawa.

#4: Shuri Castle

This is a magnificent must-see when you're on the island of Okinawa. It's Okinawa's biggest wooden building, built for the king. The colors are dazzling and the style very traditional for the Japanese culture. It's a great way to learn about the history of the island and observing the architecture of past Japanese builders.

#5: The Southeast Botanical Gardens

This is a definite must-see if you happen to be in Okinawa. The botanical gardens are huge and unlike any botanical gardens you've ever seen. There's such vivid color and a wide array of flora. While you're at the gardens you can purchase some ice cream. I recommend the Ube ice cream, because I haven't been able to find it anywhere else in the world and it's so yummy! It's sweet potato ice cream, but if that sounds weird, don't let it fool you, it's scrumptious. Sometimes there will be events held at the Botanical Gardens and it's these aren't to be missed. The atmosphere is buzzing as everyone comes together to appreciate the nature found on Okinawa, Japan.
