Five Beliefs that Make the Community of Christ Unique

Malcolm Tatum
The Community of Christ, based in Independence Missouri, is the second largest Latter Day Saint denomination in the world. With 250,000 adherents in fifty different nations, the Church offers an dynamic place for people to come together and worship Jesus Christ.

CONTINUING REVELATION

Key to the Church's beliefs is that God continues to speak to humankind today. Individuals can receive inspiration through the Holy Spirit in their personal stewardships, while God speaks to the Church collectively in matters of doctrine, faith, and action.

OPEN CANON OF SCRIPTURE

The Community of Christ affirms the Bible as its primary scripture, accepting the witnesses of the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine & Covenants as additional witnesses of Jesus Christ. From time to time, new sections are added to the Doctrine and Covenants as God reveals more of His will for the Church.

INCLUSIVE PRIESTHOOD

The Community of Christ holds that all are called according to the gifts of God unto them; both men and women may be ordained to any one of several different priesthood offices, based on the call of God in their lives. The majority of priesthood members are lay ministers, with a small number serving the Church full-time.

THE SACRAMENTS

The Community of Christ offers recognizes eight sacraments: the Blessing of Children, Administration to the Sick, Marriage, Baptism, Confirmation, Ordination, Evangelist's Blessing, and Communion (Sacrament of the Lord's Supper). All Christians are invited to participate in Communion and may also call upon the ministers of the church for Administration or to officiate at a wedding.

ZION

Zion, the peaceable kingdom of God, is multi-layered concept that begins with the pureness of the heart and reaches into homes, communities and ultimately the world to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to all people. Zion embodies the expectant hope of the time when God reconciles all of creation to Him, and the peace of Jesus Christ reigns forever.

The Community of Christ is considered one of the most open of all Latter Day denominations. Strong emphasis on affirming Christ while not demanding allegiance to a creedal statement is a hallmark of this faith. All are welcome to come and see what the Church offers, and if they are called by God to live out their stewardships in this fellowship.
