What exactly are the benefits of constructive criticism? Constructive criticism almost never seems constructive to the recipient. It just seems critical. We all have our own idea of how we should think and act. When that idea is challenged, it feels like a personal attack. We can, however use the opinions of others in a constructive manner. We don't have to be defensive. Some criticism is healthy for us. Here's why.
Constructive criticism let's you know who truly cares about you. Your real friends aren't afraid to tell you when you're headed up a creek without your proverbial paddle. They care about you. If they didn't, they'd let you drown in your own foolishness. So next time a friend gives you some gentle guidance, open your ears. They're just trying to help.
Constructive criticism gets you into action mode. It breaks you out of a dull routine. Ever feel like you're just wandering through life? When someone points out something you hadn't noticed about yourself, it can provide you with direction. Now that you know why you've been missing the mark, you can redirect your arrow toward the target.
Constructive criticism teaches you what others see in you. Like it or not, other people make a tremendous difference in our lives. The way they see us and the way we relate to them can truly change our destiny. Be glad your friend has spoken up. If others see you in a negative light, it may be time for some serious action. Don't let your foolish pride get in the way of making positive changes.
Constructive criticism makes you a better person. Of course, this is only true if you listen to and act on it. There are some instances in which criticism may not be warranted. We all have the right to live life the way we choose, regardless of popular opinion. On the other hand, it doesn't hurt to at least analyze criticism and attempt to better ourselves in the eyes of others.
Constructive criticism gives you a new perspective. No two people think alike. When a friend (or an enemy) offers advice, it may be something you wouldn't normally think of. Why not give their idea a shot? We've all heard the old saying, "If you keep doing the same things, you'll get the same results." Someone has just offered you a new solution. Why not go for it?
