Five Benefits of Having an Organized Computer

Steven Moneyworth
Many computer users struggle to get the most out of their computers. One of the easiest things that computer users can do to make their computing experience more productive and enjoyable is to organize their computers. In this article, I offer five justifications for having an organized computer.

Organized Computer Benefit #1 - Save Frustration
Probably the biggest benefit of having an organized computer is being able to find files quickly and without frustration. For example, if you take a lot of photos, it can be difficult to find a single picture in a folder of two thousand pictures. It could take ten to fifteen minutes to find said picture, if not more. However, organizing pictures by year, month, and event could make finding a photo much easier.

Organized Computer Benefit #2 - Save Time
While being able to find your files quickly saves you time, another time-saving benefit of having an organized computer is that you can sometimes reuse old projects or assignments. This is especially true for high school, college, and graduate school students. For example, a research paper for a freshman writing class could be altered and turned into a report for a sophomore public speaking class. Ultimately, having an organized computer could save you hours of research and effort.

Organized Computer Benefit #3 - Save Your Work
If you are a writer or anyone else that does numerous projects with a computer, losing a stray document, video, or folder could be frustrating for numerous reasons. From time to time, however, it is necessary to switch computers or reformat hard drives. Losing important projects during a transfer is less likely to happen if one's computer is organized.

Organized Computer Benefit #4 - Back Up Your Work More Easily
Benefits 2 and 3 both imply that an individual that does work on his or her computer should back up said work on a flash drive or external hard drive. It is easier to save and back up a person's documents, music, photos, videos, and other files if they are organized well on the original computer. The most important files can be found and backed up easily in a "batch" manner without fear of missing a crucial file or folder. This is very similar to benefit 3. It takes less time to back up work if entire folders can be saved, as opposed to culling through hundreds or thousands of jumbled, individual files.

Organized Computer Benefit #5 - Organization is Self-Sustaining
Once a computer is organized, it is fairly easy to keep it organized. One must only place files in their predetermined spot. It's kind of like keeping a desk organized. The organization itself is the most difficult part. Maintaining it is much easier from that point forward.

Finally, one can consider this - what is the benefit of having an unorganized computer? If you have any other justifications for keeping one's computer organized, please leave your thoughts in the form of a comment. Thank you for reading!
