Five Best Breakup Songs of 2010

Jody Morse
Some individuals may find it easier to cope with a breakup by listening to songs which they are able to relate to. If you are looking for a modern breakup song, there are plenty of options. Here are my picks for the five best breakup songs from 2010.

1. "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri

Newcomer Christina Perri released this 2010 breakup song. For those who are unfamiliar with the modern rock singer, Perri's voice has an Amy Lee-like quality. "Jar of Hearts" is a song about a guy who's very "on and off" in his relationship. Christina Perri sings, "You're gonna catch a cold/ From the ice inside your soul/ So don't come back for me." This is one of the most empowering breakup songs about moving on.

2. "Back to December" by Taylor Swift

This song was written about Taylor Swift's relationship with Twilight heartthrob with Taylor Lautner. The country/pop song is about wanting to back to change everything that happened. Taylor Swift sings, "So this is me swallowing my pride, standing in front of you/ Saying I'm sorry for that night/ I go back to December all the time." This is a really good breakup song that is through the eyes of someone who has not moved on.

3. "Grenade" by Bruno Mars

This fairly upbeat R&B 2010 breakup song describes the end of a one-sided relationship with a selfish person who he refers to as a "mad woman, bad woman." Bruno Mars sings, "I'd go through all this pain/ Take a bullet straight through my brain/ Yes, I would die for ya baby/ But you won't do the same." At the end of the song, it is clear that the person has not yet moved on.

4. "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum

While this country/pop song was released in 2009, it remained a hit throughout 2010. Anyone who is missing their ex will be sure to relate to the lyrics, "And I wonder if I ever cross your mind/ For me it happens all the time." The song has a very catchy melody and describes that "moment of desperation" that some feel when wanting to call their ex after a breakup.

5. "Just a Dream" by Nelly

R&B singer Nelly made a comeback with this 2010 breakup song. The song is about a guy who is thinking about being with his girl - only to wake up and realize it was just a dream. Nelly sings, "And now you ain't around, baby I can't think/ Shoulda put it down, shoulda got that ring/ Cause I can still feel it in the air." This is a cute and somewhat sad song for those who have not yet moved on.

2010 was undoubtedly a year of good music for the broken-hearted. Whether you prefer rock, country/pop or R&B, there is a song to suit just about everyone's taste. These five breakup songs from 2010 are worth a listen.
