Five Best Gift Cards for Christmas

Tiffany Aller
During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, you may find yourself running out of time to find personalized gifts for everyone on your list this year. Instead of adding stress and panic to your already overflowing plate, simplify your life and give your friends, family and coworkers a gift they're sure to enjoy: a gift card. Use this guide to figure out what gift cards are best suited to your Christmas gift giving needs.

5. Target - A store that has a little bit of everything. Target gift cards can be used both in-store and over the Internet, and your favorite friend or relative can pick anything from home furnishings to groceries as a way to use your gift. As you buy your own supplies for the holidays, chances are that a trip to Target will be on your list: simply add a few Target gift cards to your cart as you're waiting to check out to satisfy your Christmas gift giving needs.

4. American Airlines - This Christmas season, give the gift that travels! Do you have an old college friend that you haven't seen in years? How about a niece who is making plans for Spring Break? Give them an American Airlines gift card, and help offset the cost of their travel. Even though the cost of a ticket may be more than you want to spend as you go through your Christmas gift giving list, subsidizing a portion of travel can be a gift that your loved one appreciates both during their trip and long after. If American does not fly to where your loved one lives, airline gift cards are also available from carriers including Southwest, and USAir.

3. Starbucks - With the rate at which Starbucks is putting up new locations throughout the United States, there's sure to be one close to some of the people on your Christmas gift giving list this year. The good news about the Starbucks gift card is that it can be used not only to buy a Tall Gingerbread Latte at the nearest location, it can also be used to buy a bag of your favorite coffee beans that you can brew at home. Better yet, Starbucks gift cards are re-loadable, so if you're giving it to your favorite college student who is away at school, you can occasionally add a few more bucks to keep them caffeinated as they complete their studies!

2. Visa or American Express - These pre-paid credit cards will allow your favorite aunt or secretary to buy whatever they want, wherever they want, in person or online, at any venue that accepts Visa or American Express for payment. The downside, and why this didn't win first place: you, the gift giver, have to pay a fee of between $2 and $10 when you purchase the card. While this is slightly better than the old practice of gift cards losing value over time if not used, it's still fairly slimy. Convenience has a cost!

1. Amazon.com - This amazing online store really does sell a little bit of everything. The best news about Amazon gift cards is that you don't have to leave the house to buy it, send it or spend it! Although Amazon does offer traditional physical gift cards, they mainly rely upon the electronic kind that you can shoot to your favorite cousin who lives on the other side of the world with just the touch of a button. How much more flexible can you get with Christmas gift giving?

It appears that the writer did not attempt to purchase the American Express Gift Card, because the frustration involved would surely have eliminated this card from consideration altogether. I read very poor reviews on Amazon about purchasing the cards on its website. One of which recommended going directly to the American Express site to make the purchase. After attempting to make a card purchase on the Amer Express website, I believe the problem lies with American Express. Don't waste your time. As for Yahoo, it would appear that this article is only hidden advertising designed to promote clients of yahoo!
