Five Best Grilled Cheese Sandwiches in New York City
Kid Frienldy Spots with Savory Treats for Descerning Parents
Gooey, warm and so delicious. Grilled cheese is a staple of children's diets and a guilty pleasure for adults. From fancy to folksy, here are five of the best. Hurry, Grilled Cheese Awareness Month (April) is almost over!
• Googies Italian Diner, 1492 2nd Ave. 212.717.1122 - At Googie's, the classic grilled cheese starts with local Orwarsher's bread and generous amount of cheddar cheese. Served with a hearty portion of shoestring fries, this heavenly sandwich is a great value at $6.75. This kid-friendly restaurant is usually packed with strollers and has plenty of outdoor seating.
• Joe Jr.'s Restaurant, 482 Avenue of the Americas 212.924.5220 - Traditionalists have been satisfying their cravings for grilled cheese here since 1940. Grab a seat at the Formica counter and watch the cook deftly assemble the basics of a great sandwich: white bread, butter and American cheese. The cooking process starts off on the grill and then moves to the broiler for a quick blast of heat to melt the cheese. This no-fuss staple is a bargain at $3.60.
• Murray's Cheese, 254 Bleecker St. 212.243.3289 - Murray's prides itself with sourcing the best cheese in the city. So its no surprise they also make fine sandwiches like the smoked mozzarella panini ($5.95). Basil, sun dried tomato and balsamic vinaigrette top sumptuous cheese from Joe's Dairy. The chef then uses a panini press to melt the sandwich to perfection. Murray's has an inviting bench out front of their shop for those who just can't wait to dive in!
• 'wichcraft, 3 locations: Union Square, Tribeca and Bryant Park 866.942.4272 - For sophisticate palettes the grilled fontina sandwich ($9) is a sublime cheese experience. 'wichcraft focuses on sourcing gourmet ingredients like: black trumpet mushrooms and white truffle fondue. Finicky young diners can request a sandwich without the elaborate fixings.
• Verb Café, 218 Bedford 718.599.0977 - Verb café is the grilled cheese mecca in Brooklyn. Select from buttermilk or multigrain bread and then choose from cheddar, manchego, Gruyere and provolone. Feeling daring? Add artichokes for an additional $1.5 or olive tapenade for $1. For $4.25, their customized grilled cheese sandwich is served with a mesclun salad.

Post a CommentOMG, I LOVE grilled cheese sandwiches and lately have been a GCS kick. I usually go to diners but and the GCS are hit or miss but I will check out the places you mentioned. Been hearing a lot about 'wich. Hate that I didn' know about the Grilled Cheese Sandwich Shop before it closed. Great information.
