Five Best Jobs for Work-At-Home Moms

Ree Clark
Working from home can be a dream opportunity for many women. It seems the likely solution for moms who want to stay home but who have accepted the economic reality that they need to help with the finances. I am presently a work from home mom, and as a mom I have worked both outside the home and from home. Certainly, working from home has had countless benefits. I am available when the school needs me. I don't have to apologize when I leave if the school needs me. I can focus on my children first and work later. These facts make it worthwhile to work from home even though the salary often does not match that of traditional jobs.

The unfortunate part is that moms often struggle with finding legitimate work-at-home opportunities. There are a lot of scammers out there who know that many moms are desperate to be home with their children. Thankfully, there are opportunities that have been successfully tested by other moms.

One opportunity is online teaching. I currently teach online for the University of Phoenix/Axia College. My students submit their assignments online and receive feedback to their private forums. I keep "office hours" in the morning and then again later in the evening as a follow-up. The University of Phoenix is one of the oldest online programs. This is my third class to teach. You must have a Masters degree in the area you want to teach and complete a training period. The University pays $1,235 per course, and 2 courses are taught at a time. The courses last 9 weeks. Other online universities offer higher pay with courses paying approximately $2,500. So far, I have only taught for University of Phoenix, and it has been a good experience.

Online tutoring is also a solid opportunity. Sylvan, Tutor.com, and Smart Thinking need tutors on a frequent basis and the positions have flexible time periods. If you are knowlegeable in a subject area, this is a good chance to earn extra money.

In addition to online tutoring, moms can consider running a tutoring business from home. Rates can be charged from $15 to $30 an hour. The tutoring can occur after school or on weekends. There are many opportunities for subject area tutoring. Moms can charge more for specialized tutoring for college admittance tests, SAT, ACT, etc.

Freelance writing offers excellent opportunites to earn extra money. Many moms prefer to start with online writing sites such as Associated Content or Helium.com. There are many other opportunites by submitting articles to magazines such as Woman's Day Magazine, SKIRT! Magazine, Ladies Home Journal Magazine, and many others. Submission pay rates vary but can range from $25-$200.

Another work-from-home opportunity is to run an in-home daycare. This has both advantages and disadvantages. Moms can set the daycare rate parents must pay but have to entertain 4 for 5 children all day. Sometimes this can be draining. Also, moms have to be diligent about timely payments.

There are many ways moms can supplement the home's income. As more women look to stay home rather than putting their young children in daycare, these jobs offer legitimate sources of income. Especially in today's economy, moms looking to work from home have to do their research if they want to successfully have back-up income. The opportunites are there, and countless women have already started their new at-home careers.
