Five Best Movie Remakes

Joyce Carole
What makes a good remake? In my opinion for a movie remake to be considered "good", it does not necessarily have to be better than the original movie, but it needs to tell the story just a little differently. Here is my list of my five all-time favorite movie remakes. Read on and see how many of my choices you agree with.

The Ring - Best Scary Movie Remake

The American movie, The Ring, was released in 2002. The movie, which starred Naomi Watts as the newspaper reporter investigating the mysterious death of her niece is one of the most spine tingling horror movies of recent years. The movie is a remake of the Japanese film, Ringu, which was released in 1998 and went on to become the top grossing Japanese horror film to date.

Sabrina - Most Charming Movie Remake

The original Sabrina, which was released in 1954 and starred the incomparable Audrey Hepburn as the Chauffer's daughter, Sabrina Fairchild against Humphrey Bogart's, Linus Larrabee is one of the best told Cinderella stories of all time. While the 1995 remake does not compare to the original, it is still a quite good movie and definitely worth seeing. The remake stars Julia Ormond as the lovely chauffer's daughter and Harrison Ford as grumpy business man, Linus Larrabee. If you are looking for a good old fashioned boy meets girl movie, this is a good one.

Little Women - Best Movie Remake of a Classic

Louisa May Alcott's classic novel about the four March sisters has been made into a film four times. The newest remake, which was done in 1994 was one of the best versions. The movie stars Winona Rider as Jo March and features performances by a very young Kirsten Dunst (young Amy March), Claire Danes, Susan Sarandon and Christian Bale. This remake is one of the best versions of the classic story and a good movie to watch with the entire family.

Ocean's 11 - Most Fun Remake

The original Ocean's 11 movie was released in 1960 and starred the famous "rat pack" which was made up of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. The movie also featured Peter Lawford and Angie Dickenson. The original movie received a lot of attention, but not much critical acclaim. The 2001 star studded remake directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Bernie Mac and Julia Roberts is a much better film.

Dangerous Liaisons - Most Sumptous Remake

This may be my second favorite historical movie of all time(Gone with the Wind tops my list). Dangerous Liaisons was released in 1988 and starred Glen Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer. The American film was a remake of the French film, "Les Liaisons Dangeruses". The film is a lush tale of 18th century France in all its decadence.

There you have my list of the top five movie remakes. Like any list of favorites my list of top movie remakes is totally subjective. I would love to hear your comments, which movie remakes would make your top five list?

    great list!

You are right that some of these remakes should be looked at separately. They may be OK as current films, but usually can't compare with the original. The worst case of that was what they did with King Kong.

Interesting choices. I still need to see The Ring. Little Women was amazing.

I agree that these remakes were surprisingly well done. I even enjoyed Sabrina, although I never thought anyone would come close to Audrey Hepburn or Humphrey Bogart in that movie.

The only one I saw was Little Women and it was nicely done, I agree! Cheers :)
