Five of the Best Places to Find Sweet Treats in Winnipeg, Canada

Laurie Meekis
Craving something sweet in Winnipeg? Try something from one of these five favourite restaurants and stores in Winnipeg. This is a sampling of places we have added to our list of favourite things to eat in Winnipeg.

Best Shakes

We have tasted shakes in a lot of places in Winnipeg, from fast food places to regular sit down restaurants. Some are more milky. Some are watery. Some taste like thick goop with flavouring. Some are fine but nothing outstanding.

The best ones we found were at an informal restaurant called Big Guys at 15 - 200 Meadowood across from St. Vital Centre (The mall). They serve an old fashioned style milkshake in basic flavours. It is thick, rich and full of flavour. It is delicious. There is plenty of it too. It isn't fancy, but it makes you want to come back for more, and we have.

Best Bakery

I know there will be differing opinions and we haven't tried every bakery there yet, but we have tried quite a few. We like Gunn's Bakery in the North end at 213 Selkirk Ave the best. It is a family style bakery. It is a Kosher bakery.

It is run with a personal touch. When you walk in the place smells like fresh pastries. They carry everything from custom made photo birthday cakes to chocolate mice and homemade dog biscuits. They have pastries filled with cheese and spinach. They have all kinds of cookies. They have fresh baked breads. They have a nice variety of fresh baked items made for every taste.

We never seem to get out of there without a sampling of a few different treats that call to us saying ,"try me". They all look so good. We haven't been disappointed with anything we have tried there. They are a good place to go for custom birthday cakes too.

Best Cheesecake

This cheesecake shop used to be in another part of the city. Then they moved to the St. Vital area. They are right near Big Guy's on Meadowood Drive. If you go for ribs, stop afterwards and pick up a single piece or a whole cheesecake from Double D's Cheesecake and Coffeehouse.

This cheesecake business has grown and it isn't surprising. They now supply their cheesecake to many Winnipeg restaurants. They have over 25 varieties and a few seasonal flavours too. They range from apple caramel, blueberry swirl and creamy chocolate to seasonal favourites like pumpkin, candy cane and eggnog. They make the crust themselves and the fillings are light and heavenly.

You are sure to come away with a favourite flavour or two, or three. They are absolutely delicious. In warmer seasons they also offer cheesecake in a cone, just like ice cream

Best Donuts

Yes Tim Horton's is a chain of donut stores, but they make really good donuts. They have a huge variety too ranging from boxes of donut holes to filled or glazed ones. Our personal favourites are the crullers and the filled bars, maple, and chocolate.

The nice thing is they are easy to find with a number of stores in the city of Winnipeg. Our two favourites are the very busy Portage Ave one behind McDonald's and one a little further south on Portage towards the Subway sandwich shop. Just look for the packed parking lots and long lines at the drive though windows. Coffee and donuts anyone?

Best Candy and Sweets

I know this is at the mall and is also a chain, but Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory has a nice variety and some really decadent sweets.

They have killer giant crazy cookies topped with different toppings. You are sure to find a flavour you have to try. You never know what variety they may have when you go. Watch the children's eyes when they first see them; the term "big as saucers" comes to mind.

They also carry chocolates, ice cream and apples on a stick dipped and covered with everything from toffee bits to gummy bears. Our nieces love the gummy bear apples.

We like the one at Polo Park on the second floor. There is also one at St. Vital Centre.

We still have many more places to explore, but from the ones we have frequented, we list these five amongst our favourite spots to stop for a sweet treat in Winnipeg.

Good article. My personal favorites have always been the BDI and Syl's in Carmen, Manitoba. Then again, I'm more of an ice cream guy than a sweets guy.

CAKES BY SHELLEY has really great quality cupcakes! I think she mostly does wedding cakes but the cupcakes are awesome. She has so many flavors that I have to keep returning to try new ones.

Great info for the person with a sweettooth. Or just on vacation and wanting to sample some of the sweets from that region. Keep up the good work!!

It all sounds good, too bad I'm not really supposed to have any of it.
