If you are looking to put the fun back in romance then you need venture no farther in Breckenridge than an evening at the Hearthstone Restaurant. The view out of the dining room window is the epitome of sensual and the views of the mountains here can cause you to lose your breath almost as quickly as breathing in the high altitude air. It has been a staple of the Breckenridge scenery since it opened in 1989 and is located in the historic Kaiser House which is a 125 year old landmark in the area. In the winter you and your loved one can relax by a crackling fire and enjoy a long glass of wine and in the summer you can go to the upper deck and take in the view and stimulate your senses with the smell of the Aspen and wildflower aromas. The food is to die for as well and it is consistently voted as the best restaurant in the county with some of the best chefs and staff anywhere in the country. Looking towards the mountain is the perfect place to capture that one of a kind photographic memory of your trip, especially in the early evening just before sunset. Follow that with my house favorite, the Colorado Lamb which simply melts in your mouth.
QUIRKY SPOTS
Just a short drive up the highway you will find one of the most memorable stops you are likely to find in Colorado, Adventure Paragliding. Here you put your life in the hands of someone that will take you to a top of a mountain and then plunge you over the edge. After you pull your heart back into your chest from the initial takeoff rush you can snap some of the most unusual photographs that you are likely to see. The feeling of this ride is a lot like speeding down a winding mountain road. Granted not nearly as rapidly and it is also whisper quiet as only the rush of the wind past your ears and the click of our camera shutter will break the silence. You need to remember that even in the middle of the day here in the mountains it can be a little chilly. This is especially true when you are gliding like a bird and free flying through the cool mountain air. It is not unusual to get great shots of eagles in flight while you are Paragliding. Depending on the weather, the wind and the skill of your pilot, your ride can last as long as a half of an hour of pure bliss.
FAMILY FUN SPOTS
While you are in Breckenridge absolutely nothing will bring your family together and give you something to talk about quicker than a whitewater rafting trip down the Arkansas River. It is good for young and old alike and unless you are disabled this is a stop you simply have to make. I would recommend making sure that you have a waterproof camera and have it secured to you pretty well but the reward beyond the family bonding is the great action shots of the mountains, the water and the wildlife that you will find along your journey. While this is not actually in the city it is an easy day trip only 60 miles away where you literally plunge through Browns Canyon. The trip can easily last up to 6 hours so you can expect an entire day of fun for a rather modest price. While on the trip you guide will make several strategic stops along the river for rest and photo opportunities that will result in post card picture perfect memories. This is one family fun spit that will give you more opportunities for shooting photos than you may even have time for.
SCENIC SPOTS
One really scenic area to visit in the area, one that give you plenty of places and views to shoot great photos and enjoy a bit of strange goings on is the Montezuma Ghost Town. While you technically need a town to be dead before it can be a ghost town, with a population of about 42 people, it comes pretty darned close. This stop was an old mining town located down Montezuma Road in Breckenridge and you literally can't find a bad picture. The Rockies and the Continental Divide can easily be seen and photographed from here. What makes it unusual for folks is that the ghost stories abound here and one interesting bit of trivia, this was one of the few mining towns of the era that made it during the boom years with no saloon. It is rumored that on a full moon night you can still see ghosts walking the streets and mingling in amongst the various old dilapidated buildings. This is a nice spot for some rustic and turn of the century photographs. You can get there by heading up off Loveland Pass (also known as Colorado Highway 6) and it is only a short 6 miles from town. This is often considered the most scenic spot in the area.
CLASSIC SPOTS
Breckenridge has long been known as a winter ski Mecca and no trip here would be complete without a visit to the Summit Ski Museum. This place is drenched in history and is easy to find on Main Street next to the Hand and Glove and is a perfect way to learn about the history of skiing and Breckenridge as well. For the history buff there are plenty of photo opportunities inside next to all of the authentic clothing from periods dating back a hundred years. There are skis that date back to the infancy of the sport so it is a real trip for those who enjoy the sport to see how much things have changed and yet how much they stay the same. They have a very educational movie about the sport and when you walk out the front door after the tour you are staring right at the mountain range that people come to the world over to ski. Taking a moment outside to take in the beauty and then snap a picture of the quaint little main street with the mountains as a backdrop will yield a photo you will treasure for a long time.
