Five Best TV Shows of 2008

Amanda Roddy
What were the best TV shows of 2008? That may be a difficult question to answer since a number of programs disappear before their second season or even their first. Several good ones remain to pick the best TV shows of 2008. During 2008 we still had our selection of reality, dramas, game shows and comedies. Here are my choices for best TV shows of 2008.

Smallville

No matter what anyone else thinks, I still think Smallville is one of the best TV shows even in 2008. Unlike other programs, it is still going after 8 seasons. Smallville tells the story of Clark Kent before he became Superman. Clark occasionally has help from his Kryptonian cousin, Kara Kent, and the Green Arrow to fight his enemies. Not only does Clark run into trouble with villains but he also struggles with romance. The first few seasons focused on the love triangle between Lana Lange, Chloe Sullivan, and Clark. The show may be renewed for a ninth season.

Ugly Betty

Ugly Betty deserves a place in the best TV shows of 2008. Fortunately, this comedy survived past a first and second season. The main character, Betty Suarez, works at the trendy Mode magazine in new York City. Betty doesn't seem to fit the definition of high-fashion in New York with her braces and thick glasses. She lacks self-confidence and only has two friends at work. She is highly unlike all the glitzy characters we are used to seeing on TV.

Desperate Housewives

Ask viewers to name one of the best TV shows of 2008 and some will say Desperate Housewives. For some reason, I never got bitten by the Desperate Housewives bug. Yet there are people who can't live without it. The sophisticated ladies of Wisteria Lane and the glamorous fashions just don't appeal to me. The housewives story is told through the eyes of their deceased neighbor. Inside those stylish suburban houses lies romance, crime, mystery, and secrets.

Dancing With the Stars

Talent shows have made somewhat of a comeback recently. Dancing with the Stars is only rated second behind American Idol. The show pairs professional talent against amateurs. Some famous contestants include Mario Lopez, soap star Cameron Mathison, Heather Mills, Marie Osmond, and Priscilla Presley. The show appeals to viewers because of the simplicity, dance styles, and elaborate costumes. The contestants aren't competing for a contract which adds to the appeal.

American Idol

American Idol is ranked number one show even with a slight drop in ratings. It has produced several famous alumni like Carrie Underwood and Clay Aiken. Contestants perform songs in front of a panel of celebrity judges. The judges critique each performance. The judges aren't known for their good bedside manner sometimes. American Idol has been recognized more for its scandals lately than singing talent.

I don't have room to list all the best TV shows of 2008. Some others worth mentioning are Lost, Survivor, House, and Without a Trace. What will the new TV season of 2009 bring? Will some of these show still be around? We'll just have to wait and see.
