Halloween on a Budget

Growing up Halloween was one of my favorite Holidays, and it wasn't just because of Trick-Or-Treating. Sure, getting loads of candy was awesome, but it was the mystery, and adrenalin from the unknown that sparked my imagination. From ghoulish monsters, to cute smiley faced scarecrows Halloween seems to appeal to most of us in one way or another. However, with a failing economy, and tight budgets most of us our limited to how much we can decorate. These 5 simple tips will allow your family to have a wonderful Halloween without breaking the bank.

1) The Pumpkin. Halloween just wouldn't be the same without one. Carving a pumpkin is a great way to spend quality family time, without breaking the bank. Usually you can find nice sized pumpkins at your grocery store for less then $10.00. You can also check the prices at your local produce stands, however avoid speciality roadside dealers if your looking to save money. Another great way to save is to avoid buying those fancy carving kits. You can use a washable marker to outline your face on your pumpkin. If you mess up, just use soap and water to wash it off. For carving your pumpkin try using a steak knife.

2) Spider Webs. I admit that hanging store bought webs is a pain in the neck, but they look cool when your finished. You can usually pick these up for less then $1.00 a bag, and a bag goes a long way.

3) Bats. Good sized rubber bats are going to cost you around $4.00 each at your local party supply store. A cheap alternative to rubber bats are felt bats. First draw a pattern of a bat onto newspaper or cardboard, and cut it out. Use your pattern to trace, and cut out several felt bats. You can buy black felt at your local craft store really cheap. To stiffen your felt you can use spray starch or even which school glue diluted with water. Allow your bats to dry, then hang them from fishing string.

4) Creepy signs. Why pay a small fortune for creepy signs when you can make your own? Look around your shed, for old weathered pieces of wood. If you don't happen to have any, ask around. Using paint write messages such as "GO AWAY or Keep Out" on them, and hang them around your entrance, and door way.

5) Bloody Curtains. Want to really scare the neighborhood kids? You can use old white sheets and red poster paint to make bloody curtains. Simply splatter the poster paint on the curtains. You can also paint your hands and make bloody hand prints on them. After the curtains are dry attach them in front of your regular curtains. You can also use this same method to cover a body on your front porch. To make a body use a stuffed kitchen trash bag for the torso, and stuffed store bags for the head and legs. Then just cover your body with your bloody sheet, slightly tucking the sheet under the body to reveal the shape.

As you can see Halloween don't have to be an expensive nonsense Holiday. You can have lots of family fun making things to decorate your home with. The most important thing is to enjoy Halloween, and eat as much candy as you can. Happy Halloween!
