Five Christmas Book Choices for Children

Buying Kids Christmas Books

JUNEANN REED
When very small I received my favorite Christmas book. I'm past 65 now, and each Christmas pulling out that big, slightly tattered story of "The Night Before Christmas" is still so special. Family and friends have helped me build a collection of nearly 50 various selections of those special books. I use them to decorate each Christmas season.

I hope you will truly enjoy buying Christmas books for kids. They won't mind having several versions of the same story, with pages illustrated in a variety of colors. New stories are also fun and welcomed.

Choices are many and can be overwhelming. Children's Christmas books can be very expensive - or they can be purchased at Walmart etc. The following suggestions should help you get started.

1. The Christmas Story
The birth of Jesus is the reason we celebrate Christmas. You will find this favorite Christmas book written very simply for very young children, and also books that would appeal more to older kids. Families could put up their manger scenes while they read the story.

2. The Night Before Christmas
The rhyming and rhythm of this old favorite Christmas story book make it an enjoyable read for everyone. Add a cup of hot cocoa and maybe a Christmas treat or popcorn and the family can cozy in before bedtime.

3. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer
Most all of us know about Rudolph and how he saved Santa's night. Books are usually very bright and highly illustrated. Joining in the song is fun too. This favorite Christmas book from the 50s continues to be a delight.

4. Frosty The Snowman
Even kids from "no snow" areas love to read and sing about Frosty. This favorite Christmas children's book is loved by all. A great story!

5. Chose a Christmas book from your child's interests or age.
Pets, family members, travel, home, or any current interest of the child you are buying for will be a great hit. You will find many Christmas pet story books, books about grandparents, Christmas in a special area, or Dora type books. Remember, quick and easy reads are often best.

These are only my suggestions. Decide whether you want the book as the main gift - or a tuck-in type of gift. Babies love small books they can hold. Older children love short chapter books. I've found many unique, yet quite inexpensive books at the Half-Price Book Store. But be assured, Christmas books are easy to buy.
