Five Creature Comforts to Have in College

Steven Moneyworth
College can be a stressful time for many people. Being away from home, family, and friends is likely to cause at least occasional feelings of homesickness or loneliness in most college students. Although material objects can only do so much to quell feelings of homesickness, there are still some creature comforts that can make the adjustment to college life easier. In this article, I describe five creature comforts that are useful to have in college.

College Creature Comfort #1 - Comfortable College Bedding
Your dorm room mattress is unlikely to be very comfortable on its own. When buying things for your dorm room, invest in a quality mattress pad and bedding. Sleep is crucial for success in college, and restful sleep can seem heaven-sent. A quality mattress pad can help you get the restful sleep you need to perform well on college exams. Comfortable, warm sheets can also help you to get quality sleep in college. Don't forget to bring a comfortable, quality pillow when you go to college!

College Creature Comfort #2 - Quality Bath Accessories
A shared or communal bathroom can lack personality and can be uninviting. However, having quality bath accessories such as a comfortable towel and washcloth can help to make your morning routine more relaxing.

College Creature Comfort #3 - Robe and Slippers
College dorm rooms can become quite cold in the winter. Two things that can help you stay warm during the winter months are a warm robe and slippers. Slippers are also a good idea at college if you spend a large amount of time in common areas in your dorm. They can prevent you from stepping on things like food or spilled drinks. If you consider the traffic that college dorm floors receive, wouldn't you prefer to wear something on your feet rather than nothing? A bath robe can help to keep you modest if you have to travel to the shower, and can also provide extra coverage if you find that you are locked out of your dorm room.

College Creature Comfort #4 - Photos and Other Sentimental Items
Things like pictures of family and friends can help you ward off homesickness while at college. Likewise, other sentimental items such as awards or gifts can perform a similar function. The only thing to remember is that college dorm rooms tend to be smaller, so you should probably not bring larger items, such as giant stuffed animals or a chest full of sentimental effects.

College Creature Comfort #5 - Favorite Media
Having a small collection of favorite books, movies, and music can help to alleviate boredom and homesickness while at college. Again, don't go overboard. Some people choose to bring additional bookshelves so that they can bring hundreds of books with them to school. However, your college library is likely to have a number of those works, so take only your most favorite books. DVDs are more compact, but you may still want to get a CD/DVD case to save space.

Homesickness is a universal feeling at college, especially in the first month or so. By bringing some of these creature comforts with you to college, you should be able to make the transition more easily. If you have any other ideas of creature comforts for college, please leave your thoughts in the form of a comment. Thank you for reading!
