Five Date Blunders to Avoid

Five Ways to Not Get Another Date

Lisa White ISSA & AFPA CPT
A first date is both exciting and stressful. Although the first impressions must've been good in order to land a date that doesn't mean the it can't be ruined because of some basic blunders. The first date is one that should be remembered for the funny and interesting moments and not because your date is eyeballing the bartender the whole night. Here are five things not to do on a first date.

Checking out the Waitress

Though it's common practice to notice and even look at other men and women while on a date; lingering over their every move is a bit much. Not only is it considered rude because you're not giving your date the utmost attention but you're saying without words you have an interest in this other person. Checking out and devoting your attention to another on your first date is bound to make your first date your last.

Having one too many drinks

Having a glass of wine or another alcoholic beverage can be a nice way to unwind and relax on your date especially if you are feeling uptight. Just as you can over-do anything else in life; one too many drinks can send out the wrong signals. Becoming inebriated can bring out sides of a person that are embarrassing, volatile or annoying. Just as a reminder; your first date should never end with him or her carrying you up to your door.

Hot topics

First dates and the dates thereafter are usually accompanied with good food and great conversation but what happens when the discussion becomes a "hot topic?" Although topics such as politics or religion are bound to come up there is no need to press this territory on the first date. This isn't saying you can't discuss these topics during the first round but avoiding them may be a way to get to know each other without a screaming match.

Late arrival

How often is it heard "just give me fifteen minutes?" Fifteen minutes soon turns to forty-five and your date is now starving and annoyed. Being on time for a first date is extremely important. It not only shows that you're punctual but that you have a real interest in your date. Unless it's an emergency even being a few minutes late is considered inconsiderate.

Last minute cancellation

Canceling at the last minute may be a sure-fire-way for not getting another date. After much hemming and hawing over what to wear and anticipation for the date; leaving him or her hanging is not only rude but gives you the "title" of being unreliable. Getting another date is possible if the cancellation has an acceptable excuse but your date may be leary. If given a second change make sure you don't cancel again and to be on time.
