Five Date Ideas for Couples in Medium-Distance Relationships

Steven Moneyworth
It can be difficult to come up with ideas for dates in a medium-distance relationship. As I've written about before, a medium-distance relationship is one in which a couple can see each other regularly, yet infrequently. A couple in a relationship like this might be able to spend time together on a weekly or biweekly basis. Because of this, it's important to make dates count. In this article, I intend to share some date ideas and concepts for couples in medium-distance relationships.

Medium-Distance Date Idea #1 - A Memorable and Meaningful Date

If you and your significant other don't see each other that often, it's best to make the time that you do spend together memorable. Dinner and a movie is a classic date idea, but it shouldn't be the only thing that a couple does. The best dates are ones that are memorable and meaningful to both parties. This might be something as simple as taking a walk together, watching a sunset, or talking and reconnecting.

Medium-Distance Date Idea #2 - An Affordable Date

Don't be cheap, but don't feel that you have to throw a ton of money around on a weekly basis. Couples in medium-distance relationships spend a lot on travel expenses in the first place, so it's wise not to eat at the most expensive restaurants or do the most expensive activities while on a date. If you can, take advantage of things like printable coupons and special deals. Your significant other should be okay with this. Frugality is not a sin. Dates don't need to be expensive to be fun or memorable. Good affordable dates might be a picnic in a park, a hike on a trail, or a trip to a lake or beach. Couples that have more urban areas available to them might consider things like free or low-cost cultural events or art shows.

Medium-Distance Date Idea #3 - A Location-Based Date

Medium-distance couples are somewhat unique in that they have their two home areas as well as the area in between them available for dates. If any of these locations has unique activities available, consider some of those activities for a date. For example, Amish country is very close to where I live. A buggy ride could be part of a unique date. Other places might offer things like rock climbing or canoeing, so look for new activities in the "in-between zone" with your significant other.

Medium-Distance Date Idea #4 - A Surprise Date

You shouldn't try to surprise your significant other by showing up at his or her house. Instead, pick a date on a calendar and have one of you decide every activity on that day. Next time, switch. This way you and your partner will be encouraged to be creative and you'll (hopefully) be pleasantly surprised throughout your date.

Medium-Distance Date Idea #5 - A Creative Date

It can be hard for medium-distance couples to develop a high level of intimacy. Doing something creative such as drawing or writing together can help a couple grow closer. For example, you could spend some time trying to draw one another, drawing a sight or person you both see, or drawing what you'd like to do in the future together. You don't need to be a good artist to do this. If you and your significant other are musicians, you could bring your instruments and play together. It's nice to feel creative with another person, and you might be able to get some insights into your significant other's mind through what he or she makes.

Because medium-distance couples can't spend a lot of time together, it's important that the time they do spend together is utilized to its fullest extent. Hopefully the above tips will help you come up with some date ideas of your own. Have any further suggestions for possible date ideas? Feel free to share them in the form of a comment.
