One way is to purchase directly from the company that you have decided to invest in. The most cost effective type is called a 'no-load' mutual fund. These are free from the fees and additional costs that 'load' funds usually have. Also, you will save the transaction fee you would normally pay through a broker.
Going this route is simple. All you have to do is choose a company to deal with, fill out an application, enclose the amount of money you wish to invest in the fund and mail it in. Easy.
Another way to invest in mutual funds is to go online and find what is called a 'mutual fund superstore'. T. Rowe Price, Wells Fargo and others do not charge any transaction fees because they will be reimbursed by the fund itself. Be sure that you read the fine print though, because there could be hidden fees through the fees themselves. Know what you're investing in before you do invest.
The most common way of investing in mutual funds is through the retirement program provided where you work. If you have a 401K plan, you probably are already a seasoned investor without even knowing it! To find out more about the funds included in your 401K, go to the plans website. You can get this information from the paperwork you received with your plan.
A brand new fund called a '529 College Savings Plan' has been made for families who are trying to help their kids through college. The main benefit of this plan is in the tax laws that are used for withdrawals from it. In most cases, if you take money out and it is used for educational purposes, it's tax fee.
Yet another way that you can invest in mutual funds is to find a financial advisor. This can be more expensive, because you would be paying the advisor to choose the best ones for you.
The Internet is making buying mutual funds easier than ever. You still have to be careful and crunch the numbers. Make an educated choice and this could very well set you on the path to financial freedom.
