First, consider drinking a couple of cups of tea a day. In particular, focus on black and green teas. The magic, as they say, is in the mix. There are several remarkable substances that exist in these teas including anthocyanin, proanthocyanidin and catechin. The latter is heavily present in green tea and is believed to possess anti-cancer properties. Pick up a bunch of green and black tea bags and keep them at home and at work. Think about when you would most likely enjoy or have time for a cup and keep them there too. Do what you can to create the "tea" schedule in your day and stick to it. Try for the decaffeinated brands as well.
Tea is great considering it's easy and affordable. Another thing to consider is downing a cup of tea instead of other drinks that you might consider during the day which may just add unnecessary calories.
The next thing to consider eating on a regular basis is whole grains. Whole grains are now available in so many different foods including hamburger buns, cereals and even pastas. Of course, these are available almost everywhere you can find food products. One of the great things about whole grains is that they are low-fat, which is a major plus, and come without cholesterol. This is great for aspects of your body. They also tend to include a considerable percentage of protein and are packed with fibre, vitamins and plenty of antioxidants. All of which are important for staying healthy. Specifically, whole grains are great for building protection against cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes.
After regular consumption of whole grains for a period of only two weeks, it has been demonstrated that people experience relief from irregularity when combined with healthy levels of fluid intake, and a reduction of high sugar levels in the blood.
Don't force yourself into a whole grain regiment that is unsatisfying. Be sure to find products that you really enjoy. Once your diet includes these healthy choices, you will be well on your way to a happier you.
This next tip is all about body chemistry. Most people don't stop to think about how the body uses the substances you consume and what happens to those substances after digestion. With this in mind, consider healthier fats.
When cooking, the first thing you should do is toss out any and all butters, margarines and shortenings and replace them with oils that contain "healthy" fats. Get rid of all saturated fats. These are horrible for your body. For example, instead of any of the heavy butters, go for canola oil. It will maintain consistency with most or your recipes and not sacrifice taste.
Canola oil contains monounsaturated fat and plant omega 3s which are considered to come from the family of "better" fats. It is easy to find and friendly on the pocket book.
Olive oil is another great choice. It is loaded with the good fats and extremely low in saturated fats. It contains tons of phytochemicals from olives which in turn contain plenty of antioxidants and aid in the production of anti-inflammatory acts in the body. Something you should keep in mind is to always go light with the oils. This includes the healthy ones. Although they are better for the body, they can still add a considerable number of calories to any recipe. The experts also recommend switching to food spreads with added plant sterols like Benecol. These are known to help lower cholesterol and can do so within weeks.
This next one is big. It is also one of the hardest to adhere to for many people but critical for those interested in losing weight. Start cutting down on your sodium intake. This means fast foods and many of those other goodies that you love will have to start seeing less of you. Specifically, start cutting back on processed foods. Sodium is a contributor to high blood pressure which remains a problem for many people.
Eating less processed foods means welcoming more healthy choices like fruits and vegetables. Simple ideas like cooking a healthy meal at home instead of eating out on a regular basis can also make a huge difference. More fruits and vegetables in your diet and cutting out the crap can increase levels of potassium which has been known to lower high blood pressure.
Easy ways to cut down on your sodium intake include checking labels on food packaging, and selecting low sodium substitutes which most likely will not compromise taste but do wonders for your body.
Finally, get up and MOVE! It can't be emphasised enough how important some form of simple exercise is for your body. Remember, you are not training for marathons or to become the next Mr. or Ms. Olympia, you are just trying to stay healthy. So simple exercise is all you really need. For example, do something that makes simple exercise more fun. Some people enjoy walking. Walking is a great idea. Specifically, a brisk walk that gets the heart rate up. If walking doesn't sound all that appealing to you at first consider grabbing a pedometer. This is a device that counts yours steps and tells you how much walking you did during a particular period of time. Studies have shown that people looking to include walking as part of their regular exercise program who included a pedometer, tended to walk more.
If you are able to, go for a swim. It is probably the best exercise around and has remarkable benefits for the body. Studies have shown improved functioning for patients with a history of heart troubles. It doesn't get much better than that and of course, it will help you lose weight.
There it is. Simple things that can help you start losing weight right away. Now get out there and get healthy.
