Five Easy to Grow Annuals for Containers

Annuals are nice plants to fill up empty spaces in other garden plots or to fill out containers. According to Floridata, these annuals are all very easy to grow and are beginner-friendly for gardeners just starting out. Some of these selections are favorites among gardeners for their simplicity and their wide range of uses. Try some of these plants whenever you'd like to add something new to your container garden.

Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus)

From the figwort family of plants, the snapdragon is fast growing, attractive to hummingbirds, and great for starting out in gardening. They have tubular flowers in a variety of colors, upright stems, and green leaves. They need well-drained soil and full sun lighting. Propagate by seed.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

A member of the aster family of plants, the calendula is a fast growing beginner plant. Leaves are bright green and oval on the bottom of the plant while upper leaves are lance-like. Stems are sturdy and flowers are in a variety of colors. It prefers to grow in average soil with full sun or partial shade. Propagate by seed.

Impatiens (Impatiens wallerana)

This hummingbird-loving plant is from the balsam family of plants. It is a low mound forming plant, getting from 8 to 24 inches tall. Leaves are green, evergreen in warm climates. Flowers vary in color. Impatiens prefer to grow in moist fertile soil with partial shade. Propagate by seed or by cuttings.

Petunias (Petunia x hybrida)

Petunias are a gardening favorite and they are from the nightshade family of plants. Its size is determined by cultivar, as well as the flower type. Most are funnel-shaped. Leaves and stems are scented and are a bit sticky to the touch. It prefers good garden soil and sunny spots. Propagate by seed.

Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus)

Cosmos flowers are from the aster family of plants. A fast growing butterfly favorite, this annual has lacy leaves and long stems. Flowers are daisy-like and are pink, purple, red, or white in color. Cosmos prefers well-drained soil and full sun conditions. Propagate by seed.
