Indoor gardening projects for kids can be done any time of year. Indoor gardening projects are a fun way to introduce kids to gardening, science concepts, and teach them an appreciation of nature.

These five easy indoor gardening projects for kids require no green thumb, and some basic gardening supplies and plants.

Five Easy Indoor Gardening Projects for Kids

Easy Indoor Gardening Projects for Kids: 1. Indoor Water Garden

Use an old goldfish or other similar type of bowl to house the kid's miniature water garden. Plants that can be includes in the kid's miniature water garden can be floating plants. Some plants to consider for the miniature water garden include water lilies, water lettuce, floating water hyacinth, parrot feather or fairy moss.

The plants should be placed in the bottom of the bowl, their roots covered with soil. Cover the soil with small pebbles and some charcoal (for freshness), taking care not to damage or cover the plant stems. Add water, but not too much. As the plants grow taller, add more water. The water should be replaced weekly.

Easy Indoor Gardening Projects for Kids: 2. Carnivorous Plant Terrarium

Watch out kids, these plants are ferocious. Okay, not to humans. For terrariums that will receive a medium amount of light, plant some bug-eating Butterwort or pitcher plants. Water with distilled water and do not fertilize, just bring on the bugs! Carnivorous plants in terrariums will need to fed, just like little pets!

If you have a high light situation, consider planting Sundews or Venus Fly Trap plants.

Easy Indoor Gardening Projects for Kids: 3. Pot o' Flower

Purchase some Geranium or Impatiens seeds, potting soil and small flower pots. Have kids plants the seeds and tend to them as they grow. Plant outside or not when the plant has matured.

Easy Indoor Gardening Projects for Kids: 4. Pits to Plants

Kids can grow plants from an avocado pit, a mango pit, or even the top of a pineapple to grow your own plants.

Growing a plant from an avocado pit or mango pit is the same. Once the delicious fruits have been eaten, suspend the pit in a narrow container like a jar. Fill with water so only the bottom of the pit should be in water. Stick some toothpicks in the pit to keep most of it out of the water. It could take up to two months, or as little as three weeks to see the roots split the bottom of the pit. The pit will also sprout one sprig from the top. Plant it. You will have an avocado tree or a mango tree.

The pineapple top to be planted should not include any of the fleshy pineapple fruit. Let the pineapple top with a hard and stringy dry out for two to three days before planting. Plant the pineapple top in moist soil and bright light, where it is warm. The roots should sprout and the plant will grow.

Easy Indoor Gardening Projects for Kids: 5. Pizza Herb Garden

Kids can plant their own miniature herb gardens that can be used on homemade pizzas and in spaghetti, two of their favorite foods. Use a suitable container to plant fresh basil, thyme, oregano and parsley. Plant from seeds or plant more mature plants in the soil in the container. Herbs may be picked fresh and used for cooking.
