Five Easy Tips for Ensuring Great Travel Photographs

Whether you are a budding professional photographer or making a scrap book of your vacation, here are five easy tips for taking great travel photographs.

Bringing the Right Equipment

No matter where you are traveling, it is always important to limit what you carry, even your photography equipment. This does not mean you should leave your accessories at home.

To make sure you take great travel photographs, you will want to bring along a polarizing filter and your favorite wide angle zoom lens. You will need to have a sturdy carrying case for your equipment so it is protected in all types of condition.

Finding a Good Guide

Whether you are traveling to a foreign country or to a different state, finding a local guide is important. Not only will this save you time, they may have a suggestion for a location that is not on any of the travel guides.

Normally your travel agent may be able to set up a connection for a guide when you arrive at your destination. If not, you should be able to find one by asking someone at the front desk where you are staying.

Capturing Those Magical Moments

No matter where you travel, one thing is certain there will always be a sunrise and sunset. These serene images make the perfect travel photograph because they tend to show the environment in a different light.

You will want to make sure to do your research before you head out before the crack of dawn. Aside from finding out the exact times when the sun rises and sets, you should scout a few areas to see which one would better suit your needs. Take a few practice shots to see how you will want to crop the image.

Try not to over think the process once you begin taking pictures of the scene, you can wait to do that until later when you scan through the pictures.

Slowing Down the Action

There is something to be said about a photographer who is able to slow down a scene while being able to capture the atmosphere of the moment. This is especially important when taking photographs of wildlife or children.

With the advances in technology, most digital SLR cameras have controls where you can stop the shutter speed, which means sharp images.

By reducing the shutter speed to 1/500th of a second, you will be able to capture an image where you literally stop a bird in flight.

Bringing the Most Out of People

Part of what makes traveling so exciting is the chance to meet new people. It can be challenge for some but are worth it in the end. While black and white photographs can grab your attention, so does color. Make sure to mix it up when you are photographing.

When you are cropping your portraits, your subject does not always need to be the center of attention. Sometimes the most awe inspiring travel photographs are when the image is shared by several subjects.

Remember, when it comes to travel photos involving people, make sure to have them sign a standard model release. This will make things easier for you down the road in case you sell the photograph for commercial purposes. You can always offer them a few dollars in case you feel uneasy asking them for their signature.
