Take the dog for a walk. Your pet will love the walk and since you have to get your furry best friend some exercise, why not do you the favor and get in shape? Instead of just walking Fido around the street, make a routine out of it. Walk using intervals of three minutes of brisk walking and then 30 seconds to a minute of jogging.
Exercise while watching TV. Even though you may skip past the commercials, exercising while watching your favorite TV show is a perfect way to get in some activity. Purchase a stability ball and use it as a seat instead of the couch. While on the ball, bounce up and down to strengthen quads and tighten abs, then use it to complete sets of pushups and sit-ups.
Add exercise in while you're waiting. While you're waiting for your breakfast to heat up on the stove, add a few repetitions of squats or push-ups in the kitchen. To do push-ups, simply use a table or countertop to lower down on and then push yourself back up. By the time your breakfast is done, you could burn an extra 50 calories a morning and get the blood pumping for added energy.
Make use of your lunch break. If you have a sedentary job, adding exercise in a few times a day will keep energy levels up and help you burn off a few additional calories. Take walks during your lunch break if the weather permits, or do two or three sets of lunges or side leg lifts using your office chair throughout the day.
Mix up the activity. Instead of getting bored with the same exercise routine, mix it up so it doesn't begin to feel like a chore to exercise. Activities like dancing, jumping rope or swimming are all ways to burn calories without boredom.
Invite your friends. One easy way to ensure you get your daily exercise is to make it a group activity. Love chatting with your friends every day after work? Invite them on a brisk walk around the block during the early evening hours. Locate a walking club in your neighborhood to not only get exercise but meet new locals.
Park further away. While it's often convenient to scope out the closest parking stall, parking the car a few rows over will allow you to tack on more walking throughout the day. Parking further away during all your errands mean you'll end up taking on more activity by the time you go home. As always, be aware of your surroundings. Don't park somewhere you don't feel comfortable just to get in a few more steps.
