Laura Ward
"Too much television is harmful to young viewers.." The warnings are everywhere. You see them and hear them everyday. However, truth be told, some television shows that are aimed at preschoolers are actually educational and can teach your children. Of course, there are still some needless shows that are simply a waste of air time.

Sesame Street is a long-time favorite of parents, educators and children. Sesame Street is as educational, if not more, than sitting down and reading a book. The show teaches young children about letters, numbers, colors, shapes and other early childhood learning. Because Sesame Street uses everyday curcumstances in their shows, children learn how to apply their new skills to everyday life.

Barney is another show that is targeted towards young viewers and is actually educational. With Barney, Baby Bop, BJ and their friends, your child will take an active part in learning about letters, numbers, shapes, colors, emotions, seasons, animals and a variety of other things. Through songs, rhymes, stories, arts/crafts and playtime the learning is exciting. Barney is very colorful and upbeat and will hold a child's interest very easily.

Blue's Clues is another child-friendly show that educates preschoolers. With Blue, Magenta, Joe and their friends, they explore colors, shapes, letters, numbers and other early childhood skills through clues. Each clue reveals something about what Blue wants to solve. Through songs, stories, rhymes and playtime children will enjoy learning with Blue's Clues.

Dora The Explorer engages children on her quest to conquer Swiper and get to the final place of the day. Dora and her friend, Boots, are always trying to accomplish a goal and with the help of your child, they do just that. Her backpack and map help lead the way. Not only does Dora teach your child in English, she also teaches some Spanish words. Dora The Explorer is a very active show, asking children to jump, run, crawl and actively take part in the mission.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse will have your child laughing, singing and dancing as they learn about a variety of preschool skills. With Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto as the stars of the show, your child is familiar with all of the characters they are learning with. Not only does the show focus on colors and shapes, language is taught. The show does alot with everyday objects.
