Five of My Favorite Indie Horror Movies

Wes Laurie
The horror website Dread Central was running a special series of articles about Indie horror movies. I saw some directors being asked to list five of their favorite Indie horror flicks and it made me think up my own list. The following five movies are off the top of my head types of picks and I am sure if I really spent the months necessary to research all of the Indie horror movies I have seen and pick a true top five, this list would be different. I also avoided listing two of my own movies "Silent Night, Zombie Night" and "Breath Of Hate" because though they are favorites for personal reasons, no need to make this self promotional beyond the blurbage I just snuck in by saying this in the first place. Any way, here are five Indie horror movies that I think are good. Be sure to click on the titles to be taken to their Yahoo movie pages in case you have not seen their trailers before, ect.

"The Signal"
Real life is emotionally tragic and at times funny, even in the darkness. "The Signal" blended those concepts together with power rarely seen in Indie horror. I love a good movie that shows you can't be a lover without being a fighter. This movie came out and was different than a lot of other movies and fully entertained. This one is a "thinker."

"Murder Party"
It is harder than one might think to genuinely entertain someone with a limited location story and no grand budget. Depending on how many times you have watched it, Murder Party can drag during the group drug intake scene, but overall it stood out to me amongst its counterparts of limited location shoots. It was witty, funny, and gory.

"Feast"
I'm not sure what classifies an "Indie" exactly, but I see "Feast" referred to as one all over the Internet. I thought it was a hell of a lot of fun. To me a true Indie movie doesn't cost a million or even one hundred thousand if they can accomplish it, and it definitely does not get the help of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. However, not having time to really dig through the chronicles of all Indie film to pick out winners I choose 'Feast" because off the top of my head I know I thought it was awesome. Another limited location shoot that went above and beyond to keep my interest.

"The Blair Witch Project"
Like "Nirvana" was to music, "The Blair Witch Project" has been to movies. Sort of. I did not actually like the movie all that much, but it was a game changer for many in getting their minds to jogging that they did not have to have the millions of dollars of fancy equipment to go out and make a movie. This is a double edged sword of course, inspiring a lot more bad movies amongst the good., but I can appreciate the event that it was. Other movies have pulled off similarly successful feats, but "The Blair Witch Project" was the first stand out for my generation.

"Redneck Zombies"
I'm sure "Redneck Zombies" is really stupid. I do not recall much about this movie except I was a small kid and my cousins put it on the tv at my grandma's house. I saw someone get a bite taken out of them and the image still haunts me. Therefore it is great in having shaped a tiny portion of my mind in some way or polluted it, however you want to look at it. Other movies that had the same effect on me: "Ghoulies," "Troll," "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure," and "E.T." - all nightmare inducing.
