1. Gaming as Fitness
This time last year, the rage was using your video gaming system as a way to workout. It was a great idea in theory, but part of the whole idea of working out is to get away from your video games right? That, and some of the programs seemed a little complicated and it was cheaper just to buy an exercise DVD anyway.
2. Stability Shoes
These are still pretty popular, but they will be on the downturn when the warmer weather comes and people are tired of looking silly teetering around on giant gym shoes. Again, great idea to create instability in your gait to help tone muscles, but the overall benefits aren't really worth looking like that. Some simple strength training is all you need to achieve the same effect.
3. Crazy/Intense Strength Training Videos
You've probably heard people you know, or even it was you, that have tried those super intense workout videos they saw on an infomercial that promised a body fit for American Gladiators, yet you couldn't move your arms for three weeks after doing the first video. So it began a cycle of workout, pain, take three weeks off, workout, pain, etc. All for the low price of $49.99!
4. Crazy Contraptions
You know what I'm talking about. Those silly gadgets where you twist, shake, and bounce your way into fitness. Sure, they have some benefit and get you moving, but would you really want to risk being seen shaking yourself to fitter arms rather than just doing a couple of biceps curls or triceps dips? The rule of thumb with gadgets is if you can achieve the same result in a free and simple way, you don't need it.
5. The "Aquacize" Movement
2010 saw a huge "Aquacize" movement through aqua aerobics, and other water sports. Water workouts are amazing because it works your body's muscles in a different way, and gives your joints a break. However, the trend just never seems to catch on. Maybe people can't get passed their assumption of water aerobics being a bunch of old ladies in the shallow end of the pool, and not real fitness. Nevertheless, this was actually a good fad that should've caught on.
Can you think of any fitness fads from 2010 that are going to end in 2011? One thing is for sure, no matter what is 'in' as far as working out, it always comes down to just getting up and moving.
