Five Flower-Inspired Granny Squares to Crochet

Directions for Crocheting Five Granny Square Patterns

Joan H. Young
Use 4 ply yarn and G crochet hook, or any size desired depending on your personal crocheting tension and preference. I am listing the finished size of each square as I made it, but the beauty of granny squares is that as long as you are personally consistent you can join them to make blankets, ponchos, bags, etc- anything that does not need a precise fit.

Hot Rose

yarn
variegated, any shades, I chose hot colors (this takes about 24 yards per square)
green
finished size is 5 inches square. Best when alternated with squares with more definite square shape. Stunning combined with white squares.

with variegated, ch 6 and join with sl st to form ring

Round 1
ch 3, work 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in front loop of top of ch 3

Round 2
sc in front of same stitch as joining and mark this stitch
*[ ch 4, skip next 2 dc, sc in front loop of next dc ], repeat from * twice more, ch 4, join. 4 loops have been created.

Round 3
[ sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc ] in each loop, join. 4 petals created.

Round 4
fold petals forward, sc in back loop of marked sc from round 2, *[ ch 4, sc in front loop of 2nd dc of the 2 free dc from round 2, ch 4, sc in back loop of next sc between the petals ], repeat from * around ending with sl st in marked sc. There are now 8 loops behind the 4 petals.

Round 5
[ sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc ] in each loop, join. 8 petals created.

Round 6
fold petals forward, sc in marked loop from round 4, *[ ch 4, sc in next sc of round 4 ], repeat from * around ending with sl st in 1st sc.

Round 7
[ sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc ] in each loop, join. 8 petals created. If you leave the center dc of every other petal a little loose it will be easier to make the corners on round 8. Break off.

Round 8
with green pull up a loop in the center dc of a petal (not one that you left looser), ch 3, [ yo and draw up loop in same st, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook ] twice, yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (dc cluster made). Ch 4, in center dc of next petal [ yo and draw up loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook ] 3 times, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (dc cluster made). Ch 2 [ yo twice and draw up loop in same st as dc cluster, yo and draw through 1st two loops on hook, yo and draw through next 2 loops on hook ] 3 times, yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (tc cluster made), ch 2, make another dc cluster in same stitch (corner made), *[ ch 4, make dc cluster in center dc of next petal, ch 4, make corner of [ dc cluster, ch 2, tc cluster, ch 2, dc cluster ]], repeat from * around and join with sl st in top of first dc cluster. Break off.

Weave in ends on back to finish.

Aster

yarn-
gold or yellow for center
2 shades of autumn flower tones - I used lavender (less prominent color - lpc) and purple (more prominent color - mpc)
green - I used a heathery tone
finished size 3 3/4 inches square

with gold, ch 4 and join with sl st to form a ring

Round 1
ch 2, 15 sc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch 2. Break off yarn.

Round 2- back layer
with lpc join in any sc, ch 5, tc in same sc, ch 1, *[ sk 1 sc and tc in next sc, ch1, tc in same sc, ch 1 ], continue from around and join in 4th sc of the first ch 5 with sl st. Break off. You now have a "wheel" with 16 spokes. There is a ch1 between each spoke at the top, and there are two tc in every other sc of the gold center at the bottom.

Round 2- front layer
bend the back layer away from you, and work in front of it, but still in the gold center
with mpc join in any gold sc not used in the back layer. Ch 3, dc in the same sc, ch 3, *[ 2 dc in next free sc, ch3 ], continue from * around and join in top of ch 3 with sl st. Break off. You now have a front layer of 8 petals with a ch 3 loop between each one.

Round 3
with green, hold the two petal layers together and join through the top of any ch 3 space, including through the ch 1 space behind it. Ch 3, 3 dc in same space, *[ in next ch3 space with the ch1 space behind it, dc, htc, tc, ch 3, tc, htc, dc ( corner made) ], [in the next ch3 space with the ch1 space behind it, 4 dc ], repeat from * around, join with st st in top of ch 3. join both red and white to the wrong side at the place where round 1 ended. Using white only draw up a loop and ch 5 (this is just to obtain height of the puff stitch and will be hidden later. You want this to be between an inch and an inch-and-a-half tall). *[ yo and insert hook from right to left under the bar of the chain 4 from round 1, yo and draw up loop of white to height of ch 5. (There are now 3 loops on the hook), [ yo, draw up loop in same space ] 4 more times. (There are now 11 loops on the hook). Switch to red and draw yarn through all 11 loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten. Repeat around, ending with 2dc, tc, 2 dc in next-to-last tc. . There will be 6 white puff-stitch petals. • Granny squares are easy to make
  • Granny squares can be sewed together into useful items
  • Sometimes just changing the colors in a square will change the look completely
"Crochet" probably comes from the french for a hook.
