Super Bowl Sunday is the one day of the year when even girlfriends who don't know the difference between an audible and an edible suddenly become born-again football fans. Stocking the fridge with cheap beer may cut it during the playoffs, but if you plan on hosting a Super Bowl party, serve these five football-themed mixed drinks to get everyone into the spirit.
The Quarterback Sack
2 ounces gin
2 ounces vodka
1 ounce Triple Sec
4 ounces Bloody Mary Mix
Tonic water (to taste)
Combine all ingredients to make four shot glass servings
False Start
4 ounces apple cider
2 ounces bourbon
1 ounce apple brandy
1/2 lemon
Add the cider, liquor, and a squeeze of lemon into a shaker of ice. Shake well and serve on the rocks. Makes two 4-ounce drinks.
Red Zone
3 parts tequila
1 part sangrita
Splash of lime juice
Combine ingredients and serve with a garnish of lime.
Punt
2 ounces tequila
2 ounces vodka
2 tsp. sugar
1 lemon
Seltzer
Half-fill a large shaker with ice and squeeze in the lemon. Shake with sugar. Add the liquor and stir. Pour into sugar-rimmed shot glasses and top with seltzer. Makes two shot glass servings.
Hail Bloody Mary
1.5 ounces vodka
1/2 cup tomato juice
2 tsp. lemon juice
Worcestershire and Tobasco to taste
Combine ingredients into glass and garnish with a celery stick and lime wedge.
