From scenic bike rides to free family entertainment have plenty of choices in Cedar Rapids. So get off the couch and head out to explore some of free Cedar Rapids activities.
  1. Cedar Valley Nature Trail: One free family fun thing to do in Cedar Rapids is to go for a bike ride on the Cedar Valley Nature Trail. This trail runs 54-miles, beginning just off Boyson Road on the North East side of Cedar Rapids and ends in the Waterloo area. Consider packing along a picnic to enjoy along your bike ride. While riding, be sure to watch for the plentiful wildlife and birds that are frequently spotted along this wonderful trail.
  2. Beaver Park: Visit the free children's zoo and bird observation area at Beaver Park for more free family fun. This Cedar Rapids city park is located on the South East side of town and offers a playground, hiking trails, picnic areas and a swimming pool. The pool does charge admission, however. Bring along a Frisbee or football and take in a game or two while hanging out among the plentiful trees. Rolling hills and thick forest provide a scenic refuge within the heart of the city.
  3. Volunteer: Cedar Rapids is still recovering from the historic Floods of 2008. Many areas of the cities are still in need of volunteers to help bring them back to life. A great way for families to give back to the community is to volunteer together, whether it be working at a food pantry or helping paint a home that was recently rebuilt, Cedar Rapids family members can enjoy this free activity together while making a difference. Volunteer opportunities can be found on several web sites including the Usher's Ferry and Corridor Recovery web sites.
  4. Listen to Music: Cedar Rapids families are lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy free musical performances throughout the year at a variety of venues around the city. In the summer months, various festivals feature bands or concerts to take in and enjoy. Free jazz is on-hand to enjoy every Thursday in August at Noelridge Park. Area colleges, Kirkwood Community College, Coe College and Mount Mercy College frequently host free music at their facilities for families to take in a great night of entertainment for free.
  5. Explore Nature at the Indian Creek Nature Center: A wonderful place for Cedar Rapids families to get out and enjoy the outdoors is the Indian Creek Nature Center. The center is open year-round from 9 am to 4 pm. Mondays through Fridays and Saturdays from 11 am. To 4 pm. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset. This Cedar Rapids landmark features a 1932 renovated dairy barn that houses the visitor center. The visitor center hosts several free family events including beekeeping, maple syruping and prairie restoration. Or go for a hike on the miles of trails winding through prairies, forests and wetlands.
