Five Fun Denver Parks to Picnic In

Roll Out the Red Checked Tablecloth

Looking for Denver area parks to picnic in? I know quite a few. As a single parent, I took my kids to the park often for meals. It was inexpensive entertainment. Now I take my grand-kids to the same ones. We have a lot of favorites. We've been to parks all over the Denver metro area. These are the five we frequent most often.

City Park- When I first came to Denver 30 years ago, I fell in love with City Park. It's still one of our favorite places to picnic. You can feed the ducks, splash in the sidewalk fountain, walk around the lake or enjoy a free summer concert. Best of all, the zoo and the museum are right on the grounds of City Park. How convenient for a day of fun in the summer.

Cheeseman Park- When my kids were little they used to call it Cheese Park. Sometimes they still do. We used to stop at Cheeseman Park so they could play on the playground on the way to the grocery store. The thing I like best about Cheeseman Park is the wide expanse of grass. It's perfect for picnicking. After eating you can cool off in the sidewalk fountain.

Cook Park - Cook Park is located on South Monaco Parkway near Florida Avenue. The thing that makes it wonderful for picnics is it's cleanliness. Cook Park also has a nice rec center. The park is well maintained and has a pretty little stream running through it. The grand-kids like to sit on the bridges with their sandwiches and watch the water flow.

Belleview Park-This park is in Englewood, a Denver suburb. There are several things I love about Belleview Park. Of course, by now, you know I love the water. Belleview Park has a nice wading stream. We like to picnic right next to it, then cool off in the water. There's also an awesome playground, a petting zoo and a miniature train. Right next door is Pirates Cove, a small waterpark.

Aurora Reservoir Park - I've mentioned Aurora Reservoir often in my articles. In my opinion it's the best swim beach in the Denver area. It's quiet, it's clean and it has a Coney Island feel, without the amusement rides. Best of all, the sand is white. There's plenty of grills for picnickers. You can also eat right on the beach, as long as you don't bring any glass bottles. After you eat, take a swim or rent a paddle-boat, canoe or water trike. You can even scuba dive here.
