Five Fun and Meaningful Things to Do when Family Gathers on Thanksgiving Day

J.E. Ward
The family is planning to gather at Grandma's house this Thanksgiving. Thoughts of a full dining table and lots of family and friends swirl around in your mind. After the dinner is over, the day seems to flop, as if the dinner, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and some NFL football were the highlight. This year can be different, with a little planning.

1. Have a progressive dinner. Some call it a Safari Supper. Some call it Round-Robin. The Progressive Thanksgiving Dinner starts with appetizers at one house. Family members travel to a different member's house for the main course. They will travel to a third house for dessert. Or, family members can decide to do the progressive dinner at one house. They could stage drinks and appetizers on the veranda, dinner in the formal dining room, and dessert in the den.

2. Attend a Thanksgiving service. Some churches hold a special service on Thanksgiving in which members and friends can celebrate the day and give thanks to God as a congregation. Some churches offer potluck dinner after the service.

3. Exchange names for Christmas gifts. Thanksgiving with family members is the ideal time to exchange names in a virtual gift exchange. Distant family members can participate thanks to technology. People order gifts online and have them sent to recipients all the time. You can even purchase gift certificates that await recipients at the store of their choice.

4. Have a "Passion" Show. Thanksgiving many times turns out to be meal showcase. Why not showcase some other family talents too, such as art, poetry, or fashion? Is there a family member or two who are researching the family history? Thanksgiving is a good time to display or share genealogical findings.

5. Go for a walk. A long walk is something everyone can enjoy. Walking helps to fight off the sluggishness that eating a big meal tends to bring on. If there's a nearby park, the children will enjoy the playground while grownups can slip on sneakers and go as many times as they like on the walking trail.

Thanksgiving is a time for family to gather together. These are ways to make each Thanksgiving even more memorable.
