1. Visit the Battleship North Carolina. If you have never been aboard a World War II battleship, you have to check out the U.S.S. North Carolina. You'll be amazed at how thick the steel is aboard the heavily armored warship. If you climb inside the aft 16-inch gun turret, you'll find a small periscope that you can use to peer across the Cape Fear river and see the city of Wilmington's waterfront. Below decks, you'll marvel at the huge computer room and communications center. In this era of iPhones, iPods, and laptop computing, you'll be flabbergasted by the huge amount of equipment needed for basic fire control functions aboard the battleship. You'll also be able to see how the crew lived. If you are alone, the ship sometimes has a ghostly quality. The Battleship North Carolina is so well-maintained that you'll easily be able to drift away into another era. While the Battleship North Carolina is marketed as a Wilmington attraction, it's very convenient to Leland, North Carolina.
2. Play Golf. The planned communities that have sprung up in Leland, North Carolina, are home to some magnificent golf courses. The Magnolia Greens Golf Plantation offers 27 holes of golf designed by Tom Jackson. The course features nice G2 Bentgrass greens and a full service bar and deli. In the Fall of 2009, Cape Fear National Golf Course in the Brunswick Forest development will open. Located just a short drive down US Route 17 from Magnolia Greens, this tournament quality course will bring lots of visitors to the area. With two premiere golf courses, Leland, North Carolina, will quickly be transformed into a golf vacation destination.
3. Go Bowling. Development has brought lots of new stores and amenities to the Leland area. Tucked away near the entrance to the Magnolia Greens community, visitors will find a bright, clean, new, alcohol-free, smoke-free bowling alley and arcade called Thunder Alley. If you want to escape the heat, Thunder Alley offers great bowling and a full featured arcade with air hockey, ski-ball, and other favorites. Many of the arcade games produce tickets that can be exchanged for toys and prizes.
4. Eat. Leland has become a convenient place to grab dinner. Fast food joints are in abundance in the old town off of NC State Road 133 and around the Walmart Super Center on US Route 17. If you are looking for a burger, the competition between local restaurants is fierce. Andy's and P.T.'s Grille are two of the top burger joints. Andy's has two locations, good cheesesteaks, great milkshakes, and a very genuine 50's diner-style approach. P.T.'s Grille provides generous baskets of fries and lemonade that is excellent on a hot day. If you are in the mood for Italian, Antonio's and Romanelli's are hard to beat. San Felipe Restaurante Mexicano has excellent Mexican food to add spice to your palate.
5. Get Ice Cream. Of course, since Leland, North Carolina, is in the south, you have to have cold ice cream available. In the old town of Leland, Mr. Frosty offers the best soft serve ice cream cones around and has a full range of sandwiches and diner delights.
