One: Create a scrapbook for the graduate in your life depicting his or her life from infant to now. Make sure to show milestones along the way that were important to her. For an extra added touch you can get the important people in her life to add messages and sentiments to the book, if you choose. Or, you could create a scrapbook of her school years, ending with a picture of her Graduation outfit, or something showing she is about to graduate...or simply leave a blank place to put in her graduation photo. You can put a school picture from each year in and snapshots from various school events. Perhaps if you have school ribbons, awards, drawings, etc. that she earned or created throughout her academic studies, you can include them as well. Either idea that you choose is sure to be a hit and a treasured memory to last throughout your grad's lifetime.
Two: Along the same lines as the first idea, create a chronological journey of your grad's life, only do it via video. This gift can take quite a bit of time to create but will prove well worth the effort. Gather the old home videos, take out the highlights and create a video of his or her life from childhood to now that is exclusively their own. You can add interview clips in between sections of family members and friends now who might have something to say, if you wish. When you are finished with the project, you can also have it converted to a DVD if you prefer that media format.
Three: Create a quilt for your graduate out of special items you have kept from his or her life, such as baby clothes, blankets, etc., out of material that depicts special events or times in their life, out of inscribed or embroidered patchwork that writes special milestones in their lives (such as dates, and be sure to include the graduation date) or even created out of specially ordered fabric squares that are created from photographs you have sent in. This project can be as intricate and personal as you would like it to be and is sure to show the graduate just how much you care about him or her.
Four: Gather together the friends of your graduate and have them sign a memo book for him or her. This book can be created from any type of material you would like to make it from or can just be a traditional memo book purchased from any store. Make sure the pages are blank and just allow his or her friends and family to fill it in as they choose, or you can put it up at the Open House and have people sign their greetings, well wishes and memories into it upon their arrival. Let attendees know of the book ahead of time so they can bring special photos or items along with them to add to the book.
Five: If you enjoy sewing and have done so for the graduate during various times in his or her life, now is the time to create your masterpiece. The sane goes for knitting, crocheting, ceramics, clay, painting, drawing, cross stitch, etc. Any craft form you enjoy and have used in the past to surprise your graduate. The ideas are as endless as your imagination. You can make a special outfit, a tote bag, a blanket, covers, a jacket, miscellaneous craft items, sketch a portrait of them or their favorite pet (perhaps in a graduation cap), etc. Anything to commemorate the moment and let your grad know how much you care by giving them a gift of craft that will last them a lifetime.
Craft gifts are especially important for the graduate as they bring a sense of home to the recipient that will be cherished and not forgotten. They also allow you to create a very personalized and/or individualized and unique item for that special someone on your graduation list.
