We are all well aware that lodging and accommodations in New York City can cost a pretty penny. It's no small surprise really in a city where space is in such high demand that it would bring such a premium price. The good news is that despite the high cost of accommodations you can in fact afford to have a great time while visiting this fabulous city we all know as New York City.
Below you will find 5 great things you can do for free while visiting New York City. Some are cultural, some are educational, and some are just good clean fun. I hope you find some things on the list that you and your family will enjoy if you are considering New York City as your next vacation destination.
Fabulous New York City Freebies
1) Hispanic Society of America. This museum is dedicated to the study of the culture, literature, and art of Latin America, Spain, and Portugal. They are closed on Mondays and admission is free. This museum is a great cultural experience for those who wish to feed their mind for free while also feasting their eyes on some exquisite works of art.
2) The Staten Island Ferry. This New York City must is now free to pedestrian passengers and well worth the price. There has however, been a no vehicle policy on the ferry since the September 11 attacks so be prepared to go by foot. The ride is about 25 minutes each way and offers some stunning views of New York City.
3) The Famous Coney Island Boardwalk. While not all attractions in this fabulous location are free it is a definite must for all those who are visiting New York City. There are some great activities in and around the boardwalk if you are willing to pay the price and some world famous food for those who dare. During the height of the Coney Island Season you will find free fireworks displays every Friday night at 9:30.
4) The SonyWonder Technology Lab. This is a fantastic adventure and educational experience for the entire family. It is a very popular attraction and since it is free, tickets are available on a first come, first served basis. For this reason it is a good idea to book your tickets well ahead of time. You will find that you can obtain tickets as much as three months ahead of your visit. I highly encourage you to include this in your itinerary for your New York City visit and be sure to get your tickets early.
5) The Harbor Defense Museum. This museum is closed on Sundays and offers free admission. You will find uniforms, weapons, and cannons that date from the 18th century to modern era military munitions and uniforms. It is a fascinating look at the past and the present and a nice way to spend a morning or afternoon while visiting New York City.
There are many more wonderful and entertaining things that can be done in New York City for free or little cost. Most museums offer free or deeply discounted admission at least one night a week (and there are plenty of museums in this culturally diverse city), major toy retailers are also a great place for kids to spend the day while visiting, and the many wonderful parks and zoos also offer free admission during certain days or at certain times of day so that your family can enjoy the experience of places such as this while on vacation as well. I hope that I have given you enough great New York City freebies that you will be inclined to look for even more great deals, freebies, and bargains.

Post a CommentSome really good ideas in your article. Here I thought nothing was free anymore.
ok that sounded bad...they have a tradition that first time visitors are supposed to leave their bra hung on the wall behind the bar.
Cool article Andrea. The last time I was in NYC I was only there overnight and didn't get the chance to do any of these things. I did spend the night getting drunk at Hogs and Hefers though! lol the next morning I had to buy a new bra because I left mine behind the bar!
Interesting article. Being born in Philadelphia I remember the excitement of visiting NY City as a child with my Dad. Haven't been back for quite some time.
