Five Great Vacation Destinations

Robert Cole
If you're thinking of a vacation this Christmas, or are planning for one years in advance, here are a few interesting destinations to consider.

1. Belize

Belize is gaining more popularity as a vacation alternative to Cancun or Disneyworld. What used to be the epicenter of Mayan activity centuries ago has become a pristine paradise for anyone looking to relax. The crystal blue waters is home to an incredibly diverse array of creatures and on shore who knows what lost temples or forgotten artifacts lay nestled in the dense outlying overgrowth. The beaches are clean, the weather is great and the locals are more than accommodating.

2. Vancouver

For many, Canada does not sound like an ideal vacation spot. Usually vacations automatically tend sandy beaches but Canada does have a lot to offer within it's expansive borders to compensate, and one of the most popular cities to visit is Vancouver. Take a walk through history Chinatown or try to climb the nearby Grouse Mountain. Other attractions like the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre or the Seymour Conservations Reserve are perfect for naturalists. The view of the surrounding city is amazing as well and so it's no wonder that Vancouver will be hosting the upcoming 2010 winter Olympics.

3. California

If you still want to see those sandy white beaches, but you don't want to spend a fortune getting there, California is the next best option. Of course Disneyland is the main attraction for the kids, but there's plenty to do for adults, from visiting wine vineyards to the San Fransisco Museum of Modern art. It doesn't really matter what part of the coast you choose. The entire state is full of activities. In California you can enjoy the thrill of skiing and then take a short drive to enjoy a nice day laying out on the beach. If you are looking for an excursion, be sure to check out the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. If you're looking for a party, just go to L.A.

4. Amsterdam

Amsterdam may have been made infamous on tv as the home to marijuana cafes and red light districts, but Amsterdam is also home to 37 museums of historic art, a rich cultural heritage and over a dozen various festivals that occur annually. The nightlife in Amsterdam is amazing with a club and bar to cater to any kind of fancy. Check out the Artis Zoo, the famous Ann Frank House, and even a diamond factory. Inspiration is a constant in Amsterdam. Boredom is left on the plane.

5. Maui

In 2008, for the 14th time, Maui received the Reader's Choice "Best Island in the World" award. All of the islands in the Hawaiian island chain are beautiful, but Maui is especially remarkable for innumerable reasons. It's possible to experience snorkeling and scuba diving like never before in the picture perfect waters surrounding the island. Exotic, colorful fish share the mineral rich waters with dolphins, tortoises, and vibrant plants and corals. For an interesting hike take a trip to Mt. Haleakala or, if you're in the mood for fishing, get on board one of the many ferries that offer short trips out to sea. After parasailing, visiting the Pearl Harbor Memorial, eating at the Hard Rock Cafe, and renting a surfboard for a quick wave, you'll be out of breath and out of ideas. That's when it's time to head back with a head full of stories and memories that you'll never forget.
