Five Greatest Love Songs

Nicolette Hegrat
Your eyes tear up. Your heart pounds rapidly. Memories of your exes or current loved ones flare up. Once you encounter any one of these feelings while listening to a love song, there is no doubt in your mind that you have just listened to one of the most beautiful love songs. Here is a list of some of my favorites:

5.Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers: What first pops into your head when hearing this song? It's that infamous scene in Ghost where Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore are having a pottery session and get caught in the moment, isn't it? How they were able to sway to the music while making out is beyond me but it made for one of the most romantic movie scenes and what better song to complement it than The Righteous Brothers' classic.

4.All I Want Is You by U2: "But all the promises we make from the cradle to the grave. When all I want is you." The Edge breaks into what he does best and builds up the emotion of love after Bono's heartwarming voice.

3. To Be With You by Mr. Big: It's so hard to not love this song to begin with. I've always found that the 80s rock ballads were the best in form due to their notoriety of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll lyrics. So when you hear a hair band proclaiming how they'd be "waiting in a line of greens and blues just to be the next to be with you", it can only raise an eyebrow or two. Greens and blues. I know, I never got that one either.

2. Patience by Guns 'n Roses: The opening lyrics are "Shed a tear 'cause I'm missing you". STOP! Right there is an already proclaimed great love song and who better to belt out "I've been walkin' the streets t'night" than Axl? I'd love to say this is my number one favorite love song but some other band already has my heart and that award goes to:

1. All you need is Love by The Beatles: Yes, love is all you need and at the end of the song, Paul belts out another great love song of theirs, "She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah". During a time where the majority of rock and pop bands were singing about anti-Vietnam songs, The Beatles explained the solution to the problem with this song. In a world of greed and materialism, this was a unifying force.

Five love songs are just the beginning. I'm sure you can come up with other love songs whether they be rock, pop or soul. Either way, music is a universal language that can be understood by many.
