Five Greatest Video Games of All Time

W. J. McCormack
The Greatest Games of all time? It's a great question that always stirs arguments and gamer talk for hours. When I think of the greatest video games ever to grace my eyes, ears, and hands, few stand out as the greatest games I have ever played. Even fewer stand out to me as the best and brightest of all time. Since this list is so hard to comprise I'm only going to name 5. These 5 games are the best gaming experiences available that I have had the pleasure of playing for hours on end.

Final Fantasy 7: This game is on many people's list as the greatest and for good reason. It was my first Final Fantasy experience. It contains a story more compelling than most anything Hollywood has ever to offer in a movie. The characters have become familiar to people all over the world because of spin-off games a movie and collector's items. It is the single most requested game for a re-make. The game was the breakthrough that introduced 3D gaming to the already strongly established Final Fantasy series. There is so much to do outside of the story. Visit the Golden Saucer to play games, race Chocobos, and visit the Battle Arena. You'll spend hours just getting a Golden Chocobo. There are so many side quests to take part in. You can constantly go back and pick it up and play for hours after beating the story. This game just won't get old for me. Sephiroth is undoubtedly the ultimate video game villain.

Shadow of the Colossus: This game surprised me more than any game ever has. The ultimate David vs. Goliath experience is available through this game. You battle your way through 16 different Colossi. Each with different strengths and weaknesses, each challenges your mind to figure out how to drop these unique creatures. The game play is great. Realistic lifelike movements make the character seem more real than ever. The climbing mechanics are wonderful. You lose strength when hanging on to a creature so you must find a safe place on it's back to regain this stamina or you will fall off and have to start the tedious climb back on top. The story is also very compelling and very sad. A love story like no other I've ever seen. This game captured me from the very beginning and never let go.

Super Smash Bros. Melee: No other game offers this mixture of Nintendo legends in an atmosphere where you just beat the crap out of each other. I've spent hours with my friends dismantling foes from every great Nintendo game I've played in my lifetime. This game is just a joy. The ultimate good time experience. All ages can pick it up and have a blast. Nowhere else can you battle with Mario, Link, Captain Falcon, and Nes all on one stage. This game had a ton of great extra features. Such as making everyone tiny or super fast. No other game was as fun to pick up with a group of friends.

Guitar Hero 2: The game that brings out everyone's inner rock star. No matter what age or skill level, all can agree on one thing, this game rocks. Featuring songs from generations of rock legends, GH2 could make everyone happy to rock out. It helped introduce tons of young people to music they may have not ever heard. It also helped to get some lesser known bands on my play list. This game challenges every skill level. It's ability to challenge is it's greatest feature. There is also a ton of unlockable characters, guitars, and skins. Earning money to unlock these things is the best part. With well over 50 songs this game can keep you rocking for months. Once you beat Free Bird and get abducted by crazy rock and roll loving aliens the quest has just begun to cement your name as a true Guitar Hero.

Silent Hill 4: The Room : When you first awake in Room 302 it becomes immediately apparent that this game is going to be creepy as hell for the whole ride. There are some parts that could have used some work, such as the inventory. But in retrospect that aspect just made it that much more challenging. The whole game I was extremely cautious and ready for anything. At least that's what I thought. Full of great puzzles and a slew of just disturbing creatures that tend to frighten and amaze at the same time. Some creatures die fairly easily, while others require special items, and still some others can't actually die. The game also has a handful of alternate endings, which makes for high replay value. I am a veteran of the Silent Hill series which makes me highly critical of all Silent Hill games. I rented this game because I didn't have the money to buy it and stayed up playing it for almost 48 hours. That lack of sleep may have contributed to the already prevalent creepiness. Plus I had the lights off. This game is a great play and a great game for your friends to watch if you can't think of a good horror movie to watch.

There you have it. This is my list of the 5 greatest video games of all time. I know some won't agree with these choices but that's why it's MY list. If you haven't already played these titles I challenge you to get out and grab these games. I guarantee satisfaction.

3-5 years. Well considering FF7 is over 10 years old now. I've been playing games my whole life. These games are MY favs. I'm not saying everyone has to agree. You may like regular smash for the n64 a lot better. GoldenEye almost made the list. Lots of games were brainstormed. These were my 5 favs.
