Five Guidelines for Advertising on Television

Five Things to Consider when Advertising on TV

Nick Brown
Sell one thing at a time in your commercial. If you own a automotive repair shop, consider shooting a commercial about installation of brakes. Talk about how you are the fastest, the best and the lowest price. Don't go into all the other fifty different things that you do. You will lose the audiences attention. Just sell one thing.

Stick with a campaign for a minimum of two years. You might be sick of seeing your own commercial after the first six months but trust me, the rest of the audience hasn't gotten the message yet. After the first year, they have seen it and by the second year - they get it and can replay the commercial in their head which gives your business top-of-mind awareness.

Don't always go by the ratings

An advertising executive tells you that golf tournament don't have as big of an audience as the big hit prime time show everyone watches. However, golf brings a small audience that has DEEP pockets and very, very disposable income. If you sold jewelry, programming that features golf is right up your alley - the ratings didn't tell you that.

Creative sells

Create an advertisement that GRABS the viewers attention. Entertain the viewer - give them something to watch other than a location, phone number and a smile.

Stories sell

Tell a story in your commercial. If you showed a busy mom with the kids getting in and out of her mini van and then your business made it a little
easier on the stressed out mother - you told a story and the viewer can relate to the story.
