Five Guys Burgers and Fries in Charleston, South Carolina

A Review

This past spring our family spent a week in the Charleston, South Carolina area for a relaxing week of beach time, golfing, and getting to know the area much better. We had visited the location for the last seven years, but we always like to unearth a new treasure upon every annual visit. Well, we met up my in-laws this past year who have a winter home located near Charleston. We all met to go for a stroll in downtown Charleston for the day with a planned visit to the Five Guys Burgers and Fries located in the West Ashley area of the Savannah highway.

The restaurant is conveniently located right off Highway 17 a few miles outside of the downtown Charleston shopping district. We pulled into the restaurant parking lot which was really a strip mall parking lot. The restaurant was exposed to the highway with outdoor seating. The interior of the restaurant was very simple with red, white, and black décor throughout. The day was a little warm and the air conditioning was kicked up in full blast at the restaurant. We made our way to the counter to check out the overhead menu which seemed pointless as we all had our appetites set on hamburgers.

We scanned the menu board overhead and the offerings were as advertised, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, bacon hamburgers, and bacon cheeseburgers. The burgers were sold in one patty and two patty sizes. The burgers are freshly made and never frozen so we decided to give in the the hype and find out for ourselves if these burgers lived up to the hype. The menu also sold large hot dogs which my son opted for. Everyone ordered fries though we only had to order a few cups of fries as the cashier advised us that the quantities were quite large.

The prices were reasonable as we paid three and a half bucks for a burger with choice of about a dozen different toppings which were included with the price. The fries were a few bucks for a styrofoam cup which was enough to be shared by two or three hungry adults. Add drinks to the orders and I would say each person would have averaged about six and a half bucks for lunch.

Most of our group went outside to claim our table since the weather was nice. My father in law and I stayed back to await our order for a few minutes. While the food cooked, we helped ourselves to the self serve peanuts in a shell table. This is a nice offering by the restaurant and we knocked down about a half dozen peanuts waiting for our order. Our food was ready in about five minutes and we brought the food out to the table. The drinks were self serve so we grabbed a few sodas and sweet teas.

The burgers were extremely tasty and the toppings were fresh. I really enjoyed this burger and was a little remiss that I did not order the double patty. I cured my huge appetite by dining on some extra fries. The fries were excellent as they were cut with the skins still on and deep fried in peanut oil. The fries had a tasty delicate crispiness that everyone really seemed to enjoy.

Overall, everyone was quite satisfied with their meal and a return visit is definitely going to happen when we return to this area or any area that has a Five Guys store. The service was great, the food was incredibly tasty, and the store was extremely clean.
