Five Hair Trends to Look Forward to in 2011

Jenna de Salea
With the new year starting it's time to look ahead and update our looks a little bit. Maybe you're in a bit of a style rut and want to try something new this year. Here are five of the biggest hair trends coming our way in 2011!

1. Return of Auburn
Red is back, and it's back in a big way. But this isn't cartoon-y crimson or bordello burgundy. The hot new shade is a burnt auburn with a dark blonde or light brown base. Very natural, and pretty. Think Emma Stone in "Easy A". It's best to go red via a salon professional, because so many things can go wrong when working with this color. You don't want to end up in a salon chair having your pink hair fixed anyway.

2. Blunt Cuts Are Back!
It's time to trade in that 15 year old layered haircut and go with a single length blunt cut. Some tend to shy away from the blunt cut because it can make the hair look heavy, but done at the right length and a little razoring in the right places can remove some of the bulk and make it look great.

3. Waves, Waves, and more Waves!
Waves have been inching their way back into the mainstream, but they're back and here to stay in 2011. Think big tousled, loose waves instead of spiral curls via perm or curling iron. Use velcro rollers, or the new large barrel wave irons and have some fun with this look!

4. Big Hair is Here to Stay
With wavy hair making a permanent comeback, so is big hair. Not huge, 80's crunchy hair created with crimping and Aqua Net, but soft, bouncy, healthy hair with a ton of body. Maybe a light mist of hairspray and some teasing at the crown for a more dramatic effect, but the idea should be 'natural' big hair, not 'manufactured' big hair.

5. The Return of the Updo
After years of the pony tail dominating the hair trends, the updo is coming back, and the classics are leading the way. From chignons, to french twists, to braids, the new twist on these classics is for them to look loose, effortless and not too structured.

So 2011 looks to be a year for great, fun hair. Go ahead and experiment with some of these and find out which ones you like best. Are you going to do anything to change your look in the New Year?
