Five High Grossing Movies Which Have Won a Razzie for Worst Movie of the Year

Rolando Cruz
Let's face it, not every box office hit can be like Titanic, the 1997 blockbuster which earned 14 Academy Award nominations or Avatar, the 2010 record breaker which received 9 Academy Award nominations. Sometimes Hollywood puts out a movie which does well at the box office despite lukewarm reviews from critics, while other times film makers can put out an infamous money maker which ends up taking home the dubious Golden Raspberry Award for the year's worst movie. Here than are five Hollywood box offices hits that have gone on to win a Razzie for Worst Movie of the Year.

Transformer: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Though the 2009 Transformer sequel enjoyed the third highest box office opening of all time ($62 million) and though it went on to earn over $800 million in both domestic and foreign box office ticket sales, the movie failed to be a winner with the critics. One reviewer went as far as calling it "for the uninitiated, it's loud, tedious, and at 147 minutes, way too long." In the end, this blockbuster earned itself 7 Razzie nominations, taking home the award for Worst Movie of 2009.

Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
The second offering of the Rambo franchise earned over $300 million worldwide, which was good enough to make it the highest grossing effort in the Rambo series. Though the movie would go on to earn an Academy Award nomination for best sound, it also earned the Razzie for the Worst Movie of 1985. Interesting enough, the movie was written by James Cameron, the famed Hollywood director who would later score big with both Titanic and Avatar.

Indecent Proposal (1993)
An enormous box office hit which earned over $260 million worldwide in 1993, Indecent Proposal (based on a Jack Engelhard novel of the same name) , started mega movie stars Robert Redford and Demi Moore. Despite its obvious star power and commercial success, it failed to win over the critics, most of which cited that the characters were underwritten and that the film "pandered to our basic instincts." The movie went on to win the Razzie for Worst Movie of 1993.

The Wild Wild West (1999)
While "The Wild Wild West" was hardly a bust at the box office, earning over $220 million worldwide, the 1999 silver screen revival of the old TV series turned out to be a high budget($170 million) turkey that failed to live up to Its pre-production hype. In the end, the movie was so bad that its star Will Smith apologized to TV's original Jim West (Robert Conrad) for its poor showing. However, the movie was not overlooked by the Razzie voters, which voted it the Worst Movie of 1999.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)
Over the years the Star Trek franchise has produced numerous box office hits, and "Star Trek V," was no different earning over $70 million, which far surprised its $27 million budget. However, its financial success did not keep both fans and critics from blasting director's William Shatner's poor effort, or the lack of special effects which had become the hallmark of the franchise. One critic went as far as saying, "There is no clear line from the beginning of the movie to the end, not much danger, no characters to really care about, little suspense, uninteresting or incomprehensible villains, and a great deal of small talk and pointless dead ends . "In the end, the movie would win the 1989 Razzie for Worst Movie.
