During the late fall season, it's easy to find yourself sitting in your recliner or on your couch exhausting the last paragraph or two of the local paper or your favorite magazine. Offered here are some home remodeling ideas to break up the seasonal stalemate. These home improvements can not only beautify but also make practical use out of existing space in your home.

Winter Home Improvement - Install or Replace a Bathroom Vanity or Sink

Many older homes have porcelain coated cast-iron sinks mounted on the wall with exposed drain pipes and water supply pipes. Replacing these sinks with an attractive wood cabinet vanity along with a new medicine cabinet or mirror can immediately brighten up an otherwise mundane décor while providing extra cabinet space for storage of bathroom supplies. This also affords an opportunity to replace flooring and wall trimmings without obstruction. This is a great winter project because virtually all of your work is indoors.

Winter Home Improvement - Create a Recreation Area

An excellent home remodeling project that can be accomplished and utilized in the winter is creating a recreation area. If your home has a basement or a room that has recently been vacated then this project is for you. One of the first things to do is install an appropriate floor covering. Laminate wood flooring or vinyl flooring will provide a durable surface for heavier gaming pieces like a pool table or a Ping Pong table. Mirrors, colorful art, and wall games such as darts lend to the fun appeal of the room. Let your imagination guide you as to what will work best in your recreation are. The point is to take advantage of the winter months to accomplish a great remodeling project because you will spend time improving the room as well as enjoying the finished product throughout the remaining cold weather season.

Winter Home Improvement - Remodel a Bedroom Closet

Regardless of the time of year, most everyone finds themselves in need of a more functional closet space for clothing. Wardrobe additions almost always exceed wardrobe donations out. Winter provides the best opportunity to modify an existing closet to better suit space constraints. One way to do this is to construct a center shelving unit that can contain a combination of drawers and/or cubby holes for storage. Closet rod can extend from either side to the existing closet walls. Sweaters and shoes can easily be stored in these places freeing up congested hanger space.

Winter Home Improvement - Start Indoor Plants and Flowers

Building or utilizing an indoor green house can be a fun way to pass the winter season. Preparing and maintaining seedlings in preparation for spring planting is an inexpensive yet very practical activity during the frost filled days. Grow lamps are a good alternative if natural light is not available (I.e. basement or otherwise dimly lit areas). When spring has finally sprung, you will have a head start on the growing season and the plants and flowers you nurtured in the winter will be hardy enough to withstand April showers.

Winter Home Improvement - Assess and Replace Lighting

The grey of winter can often send one's spirit into the seasonal doldrums. One way to combat this sentient fatigue is with a project that will not only occupy spare time but also improve the lighting in your home. Ceiling fans with ornate lighting kits are an inexpensive way to beautify any room while providing a warm glow. Another possibility includes installing lights under upper kitchen cabinets. These low voltage halogen lights provide ample illumination over countertops from an opaque perspective and install in a snap.

Winter provides everyone with a unique opportunity to catch up on smaller but important home remodeling tasks. Take advantage of the season yourself!
