Five Homeschool Teaching Tips

Being a good homeschool teacher is different from being a good public school teacher and from being a good parent. In order to be a good homeschool teacher you need to be able to excel in a number of roles including parent, spiritual teacher, academic teacher and education administrator. With all of these roles that you need to play it is no wonder why some parents get overwhelmed by the process of being a homeschool teacher. Fortunately, there are ways to enhance your ability as a homeschool teacher and to enhance your ability as a parent educator.

Tip #1 - Don't Neglect Your Own Education

In order to be a good homeschool teacher you need to be well educated yourself. This means that you not only need to learn about the various teaching methodologies that you can use to educate your students, but you also need to brush up on the subjects that you will be teaching your kids. This can be done by reading, by taking online courses and by exploring fields that you are interested in.

Tip #2 - Connect With Other Homeschool Teachers

A great way to improve your abilities as a homeschool teacher is to connect with other homeschool teachers. This connection will provide you with the professional and personal support that you need to develop your teaching and parenting skills. You can learn from the experiences of other homeschool teachers and you can also find resources through these peers as well.

Tip #3 - Review a Variety of Curriculum Options

When developing the curriculum for your homeschool program it is important to review a number of curriculum sources before deciding on one to purchase. Digital curriculum programs are a great option for homeschools, however, you need to evaluate each program for content to make sure that it is in line with what you want to teach your kids. For example, some programs will have a religious focus while others will take a more secular approach.

Tip #4 - Evolve as Your Kids Mature

As your kids work their way through their educations you need to evolve your curriculum to meet their changing educational needs and interests. For example, if your kids develop an interest in engineering then you can add an engineering module to your curriculum. On the other hand, if they are interested in movies then you can develop learning activities around movie production, movie history and screenwriting.
