Now that school is back in session, it is time for the kids to start doing homework every day again. There are several different things you can do to make sure your kids take care of homework every single day and that it is an enjoyable experience for you both. Try these 5 tips to help your kids out this school year!
1. Make up a set time for homework every night. You can do this right after school, after dinner, or whenever works best for your family. If they know every night at this time they will be doing their homework you will keep the arguing to a minimum. Make sure the area they do homework is organized with pencils, paper, and other items they might need each day. You can do this at a desk, on a table, or anywhere that works in your home. If you do not have a set area, you can get together a small tote that they know they can use items from for homework. This makes them easy to locate.
2. Avoid distractions during homework time. Turn off the TV or radio. If they have younger siblings, take them in the other room and get them started on a snack or project so that they will not bother them while they are doing their homework.
3. Do not be afraid to use the internet for help. If their homework has a word that you or the child does not understand, look up what it means. This is not cheating, but simply figuring out how to do the assignment.
4. Help them prepare for tests. As a parent, you should read them spelling words and let them say them back to you or help them by using a study page sent home by the teacher. You can let them read out loud to you from a book. There are many simple ways that you can help your child get ready for a test.
5. Do not do it for them. Your child will not learn if you are answering their questions. Simply show them how if they need help and then let them do the work on their own. If they are making an art project, help by giving them the tools to do it and ideas, but do not take over and do it yourself. This will make your child do things on their own and learn from it.
