Five Ideas for Dreadlock Styles in Women's Hair

Rochelle Connery

Dreadlock styles for women vary from plain, hanging dreads to intricate styles that take hours to create. These options will give you an idea of what to do with your dreadlocks to style them fashionably.

Peacock style: Wear your dreadlocks pulled over to one side of your head. Put highlights in just a couple of the dreads. Then, tinge the bottom half of angled bangs in a bright color, so when the bangs hang off the side of your face, it looks a little like feathers. The more contrast the dipped tips have to your hair, the better.

Punk pigtails: Split your dreadlocks into two sections. Put each section in an elastic band to act as pigtails. Then, wrap a silky ribbon around the front of your head between any bangs you might have and the pigtails. Tie the ribbon at the back of your neck. This is an adorable style, especially for a woman in her 20s.

Center part with dark roots: Channel a little Shakira in your style and get the dreadlock styles she's famous for wearing. Part hair down the center or near-center of your scalp,. Keep the roots near your scalp dark and bleach the rest of your hair blonde. The sides near your face should be shorter than the hair towards the back. The dreads should frame your face near the front and drape naturally down your back with the longer braids.

Knotted buns: Need an dreadlock styles in updo format? Wind three or four dreadlocks at a time around their roots in the form of a bun. These will form cinnamon roll shaped dreadlock buns that will keep your hair off your back and serve as great eye catchers besides.

Mohawk: Braid the dreadlocks from bottom to top, rather than top to bottom, in order for the loose ends to sit on top rather than hang down. Use hair pieces to bind them in a Mohawk on top, or braid the loose portions into one big French braid along the top center of your scalp to form the Mohawk.
