Five Mismatched Athlete/Celebrity Relationships Tailor Made for the Tabloids and Eventual Breakup

Rolando Cruz
Though there are plenty of celebrity couples made up of athletes and entertainers, not all of these relationships share an equal amount of star power like Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe once did, or Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen currently enjoy. More often than not, today's relationships are made up of a bona fide star coupled with a lesser known celebrity, which typically dooms the romance from the get go. Here then are five athlete/celebrity relationships whose mismatched fame are tailor made for the pages of the tabloids, and which most likely end up in a breakup once egos begin to get in the way.

Derek Jeter and Minka Kelly
He's the popular captain of the New York Yankees whose stellar career will ensure his enshrinement in Baseball's Hall of Fame once his playing days are done. She's an actress whose claim to fame is playing a Pink Power Ranger on a kids' TV show, and a cheerleader on the TV series "Friday Night Lights." The fact that she was named "Esquire" magazine's "Sexist Woman Alive in 2010," has more to do with her relationship to Jeter than anything else. Though it is rumored that this relationship is headed for the altar, Derek Jeter's declining career may prevent a happy ending.

Adriana Lima and Marko Jaric
She is a the famous Brazilian and Victoria's Secret model who has made both "People" magazine's list of the 100 most beautiful people in the world, and "Forbes" magazine's top 100 list of the highest paid and most powerful celebrities in the world. He is a NBA basketball player from Serbia who has averaged an unimpressive 7.1 points per game during his lackluster career. Though the two eloped in 2009, and have had a child together, the extreme differences in their celebrity status may spell doom for their relationship soon.

Tony Romo and Candice Crawford
With a dating history that includes high profile celebrities like Jessica Simpson, Sofia Bush, and Carrie Underwood, Tony Romo is no stranger to dating someone with the same star power he has. Unfortunately the star quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys just got engaged to former Miss Missouri Candice Crawford. While Crawford certainly has the same type of look as some of Romo's past girlfriends, her only claims to fame are her beauty pageant experience and her relationship (sister) to Chace Crawford of "Gossip Girl." But despite the odds, the pair have gotten engaged.

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson
Sure, Jessica Simpson rebounded from her relationship with Tony Romo, by starting one with NFL Tight End Eric Johnson; the couple announcing their engagement in November of this year. Currently, Simpson whose net worth is estimated at $750 million, is looking to sign a prenuptial agreement with her new man, and has yet to call Johnson, "the one." Both are signs that this relationship is far from an ideal one. Johnson, a Yale graduate, last caught a pass in the NFL in 2007, and has enjoyed a rather uneventful professional athletic career.

Rihanna and Matt Kemp
There are rumors that this relationship may be on its way to being over already, courtesy of allegations of cheating on both sides. If it is over, it certainly would be in keeping with most lopsided athlete/celebrity hook-ups. While L.A. Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp certainly enjoyed a career year two seasons ago, he was just an above average baseball player last season when his batting average dipped below .250. In the same span of time, Rihanna, whose net worth is estimated at $25 million is well on her way to greater fame.
