Five Must-Haves for Accessorizing Your Laptop

Guy Ames
Deciding to go from a desktop to a laptop can be a very difficult decision. Both have positive and negative points to think about, but the mobility of a laptop is an important consideration. If mobility is important, then a laptop is a great investment. Most people do a considerable amount of research and price comparisons prior to buying a laptop. When they finally decide on the exact brand, model and features they want they purchase the laptop and take it home to set it up and register the software. Shortly thereafter an avalanche of emails arrive advertising upgrades and accessories that are needed to make the laptop the most up-to-date possible. Since the laptop has just been purchased it is important to consider the value of these upgrades and add-ons based on the actual needs you will have for the computer.

Software

Prior to deciding to purchase any software it is important to consider what you want to be able to do with your laptop. If you have a specialized program you wish to run or a particular type of software then it will need to be purchased and installed. Since software can be expensive it is wise to decide what you need prior to purchasing the program. Check and see if there may be programs that combine more than one type of software needed to save on the cost.

USB Ports

These ports are used to hook external devices such as webcams, digital cameras, printers or other peripherals. Most laptops come equipped with two ports, however you may find that you have more than two peripherals that you would like to use with the laptop. A relatively inexpensive USB hub can be purchased to plug into your computer USB port and provide extra USB hookups.

Printer

At some point in time you will need to have access to a printer for your laptop. Most people do some word processing or graphic design on the computer and it is important to actually see it on paper to check for overall appearance. A desktop computer printer will work with your laptop and is great for home use. Business centers in many hotels or copy stores can also be used to print out items while on the road. Occasionally these printing locations may be hard to access or even impossible to find. A small, specially designed portable printer is a very useful accessory for your new laptop. These printers are very small and lightweight and are easily connected to a laptop to deal with last minute printouts and providing up-to-the minute data on handouts or presentations.

Power Supply

If you are on the road or use your computer for long periods of time it is wise to invest in a good power supply. This prevents reliance on the limited life of your computer's batteries. Make sure that the power supply that you purchase is compatible with your computer.

If you travel internationally with your laptop purchasing a power converter is a must. The other alternative is to purchase a power supply for your laptop in the country that you are visiting. Depending on how much international travel you do purchasing power supplies for each country may become impossible, so a converter is just the item.

Notebook cooler

If you use your laptop in hot climates or in direct sunlight a laptop cooler is an accessory that can extend the life of your laptop. This device provides two benefits to your laptop; it protects it from damage and keeps the CPU cool and working at optimum speed. The laptop cooler requires a USB port to plug into, but is not an issue if you either have a hub or are not using other peripherals.

In summary, it is important to consider what you are planning on using the laptop for before deciding what accessories are needed. Depending on individual needs there are various other accessories that may be required. Additional accessories make the laptop more versatile and usable, but they do cost extra. To avoid making purchase that just sit and gather dust it is important to evaluate your needs and then do a bit of research.
