Five Must Have Items to Spice Up a Healthy Kitchen

Eating Healthy Never Tasted so Good!

Eating healthy does not mean sacrificing taste. Granted, there are some items and substitutes that may take a little getting used to, but there are ways to make these foods more desirable. Many times, the spices used in any dish can be transferred into a similar dish that is meant to substitute or replace that meal. Lasagna, meat loaf, pasta, chili, and so many other dishes can be recreated in another way to be a healthier dish. Many people will argue that it will not taste the same and I wholeheartedly agree. However, there are many ways to make your food appetizing without packing in unnecessary calories.

I keep five main ingredients in my pantry at all times. These ensure that I will never have to serve a bland meal any time of the day! Remember that all seasonings are not created equal, some may contain extra salt, so be sure to read labels.

The first ingredient that I always have on hand is fresh garlic. If you don't have the time to chop your garlic, you can purchase it in a jar as minced. I don't use the dried minced variety, which is just a personal preference. Garlic not only makes your food taste better, it is good for heart health. The many benefits of garlic that scientists have found are reason enough to add some to your every day diet, let alone the fact that it really does taste good!!

The next thing you always should have on hand is a peppercorn blend. I like to combine red peppercorns and black peppercorns. Grinding this combination directly onto the food before, during, or even after cooking will surely pack a punch! If you do not like pepper, just add a little for the taste before preparing the food. The flavor will be absorbed throughout the food and not be so concentrated into one area.

Paprika is another spice that can be used on almost anything and make it taste great! That is why it is number three on my list! Paprika can be purchased sweet, smoked, or hot. This makes it one of the most versatile spices to be used. Deviled eggs, tuna or chicken salad, steaks, fish, and even vegetables can be complimented by this wonderful spice. Purchase a few of the varieties and use them as you wish. A few jars of paprika can last a very long time and kick up any recipe!

Number four on the list is wheat flour. Any recipe that calls for flour, you can use wheat flour instead. It does not drastically change the taste and it is healthier. Whether you are making pancakes on a Sunday morning or rolling out pizza dough, wheat flour is a healthier option.

The last item on my list is sea salt. If you must use salt, use sea salt. It is better for you and contains trace amounts of other minerals like potassium, calcium, and magnesium. It is not as bad for you as iodized table salt. It is still sodium and should be used in small amounts, and certainly in moderation.
If you keep these five ingredients in your pantry, you will be able to wow your taste buds with any recipe! It will make eating healthy enjoyable and your whole family will be happy!!! Happy eating!
