Five Natural Remedies for Poison Ivy

For as many over the counter medicines there are just as many natural home remedies to help you cure that itchy feeling caused by poison ivy. Come along as we explore the common as well as some of the not-so-common natural home remedies for the cure!

First we take a look at the banana peel. After eating the banana take the peel and gently rub it along the affected area to help soothe and cool the itching sensation.

Another great remedy is to use the Jewelweed. You can cut open the leaf or stem of this plant and apply the juice to the rash to ease the irritation of poison ivy. You can also boil chopped Jewelweed until you get a dark orange liquid (yellow Jewelweed does not have the same affects). Allow it to cool to room temperature, here you can sip on the liquid as you would a tea or you could strain the liquid into ice cube trays and allow it to freeze. After they are frozen you can apply directly to your poison ivy rash instantly cooling and soothing doubly (because of the ice and the Jewelweed)!

Next, try the mint leaf. Known widely for its healing agents to help soothe and calm an aching stomache; try a mint menthol ointment applied topically to your poison ivy, after about two days your rash should begin to clear up.

Usually a cool compress with water helps to ease the dry burning and itching pain. Why not try a cool compress with Burow's Solution? This solution was invented in the mid-1800's by Karl August Burow, of about 13% aluminum acetate dissolved in water. This helps to keep the area clean and free from infection while drying out the rash, as well as soothing the burning sensation.

And lastly if all of these other remedies do not work, this one will! Boil oatmeal as you normally would for breakfast and then let it set until room temperature. Apply to the affected skin as a paste and let dry. The oatmeal will harden on your skin. This will help to relieve the itching and burning sensation. Then try soaking in an luke warm oatmeal bath for about 25 minutes, using about one cup of oatmeal. This will instantly sooth your itch. Afterwards be sure to pat yourself dry carefully.

Good luck and I hope these cures help your itch!
