Five NFL players fined for excessively rough hits

We all know that football can be a dangerous sport. Hard hits to the body, broken bones and sprains go hand in hand with football. There are times when the playing gets excessively rough, and players are fined or removed because of their illegal hits. There is a lot of controversy to whether or not these fines are fair, but these illegal hits can remove a player from the game or impair them for the rest of their lives. Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has been fined $20,000 for a rough hit on Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton. Suh plans to appeal the fine. He was also fined twice last year for rough hits on Chicago's Jay Cutler and Cleveland's Jake Delhomme. Other NFL players have also felt the sting of being fined for rough hits.

Julius Peppers

In 2011, Chicago Bears Julius Peppers was fined $10,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers. He denied rumors that he received a concussion as a result of the hit from defensive end Julius Peppers.

David Stewart

In 2010, Tennessee Titans right tackle David Stewart was fined $20,000 for an unnecessary late hit on a Miami Dolphin player away from the pile. At that time, the Titans were at the top of the list for the team with the most fines, and had received approximately $119.500 in fines for that season.

Brandon Meriweather

In 2010, New England Patriots Brandon Meriweather was fined $50,000 for two helmet to helmet hits on Baltimore Ravens quarterback Todd Heap. Heap received medical attention on the field, but got up on his own after a few minutes. Meriweather was not suspended.

Ray Edwards

In 2010, Vikings Ray Edwards was fined $20,000. This fine was for spearing Cowboys Marion Barber. Edwards was fined three other times, and on each occasion he received a fine of $5,000. One of the $5,000 fines was reduced to $2,500. The reason this latest fine was so high is because Edwards is a repeat offender.

Dunta Robinson

In 2010, Falcons Dunta Robinson was fined $50,000 for his hit on Philadelphia's DeSean Jackson. Robinson received a concussion from the hit. Many players supported Robinson, and felt his hit on Jackson followed the league rules.
